John Updike's A & P

Rubberneck, courageous, and foolishness, as in the story “A&P,” by John Updike (1961). It narrates three young females jostling into the store with inappropriate garments on that were highly restricted to the stores demands as for a man on aisle three who caught a glimpse at the three young broads who walked into the store. One with a plaid green two-piece, the next women had on a dirty pink two-piece and the last girl had an orange two-piece. None of them have seemed to be wearing any shoes and violated all terms to the store about the dress code.

As soon as the young females had entered the “A&P” store two of the other cashiers had seemed to Trudged their eyes over to the young individuals as they were walking around the bread and promenade themselves toward sammy's check out. Gawking them the whole time the kids were in the store. Going from aisle to aisle getting dayley grocery materials for everyday use was going from aisle to aisle disappearing from sammy's vision .
On the other hand while sammy was trying to keep up with the young individuals they have trodden themselves up onto sammy's kingpin as he seemed to be highly furious with the juveniles.
He vocalized, ”We want you decently dressed when you come in here.” As they counter mr langley, “We are decent”. Then mr langley riposte to the girls, “ Girls, i don't want to argue with you. After this coming in here with your shoulders covered. Its our
policy.”

As for the king pin (Mr langley) had then incensed the girls. They were on there way to the exit. As soon as the girls were almost out there door sammy exclaimed, “I quit!” the girls had not seemed to hear sammy quitting the job as for he had cast his apron down on the cash register had began to hurry for them quickly out the door. Before he knew he had been too late leaving sammy in the parking lot with his boss and no job. His boss asked, “Did you say something sammy?” sammy countered “I said, i quit” mr langley said, “you didn't have to embarrass them.” sammy replied “It was they who were embarrassing us.”

I believe that sammy was a hero for trying to stick up for the young individuals from the other cashiers gawking the females the whole time they were in the store and that he was trying to stand up for the girls from being harassed from the boss and the other cashiers. On the other hand i disagree about him being a hero is because he should have never quitted his job to sacrifice himself in any financial way. He could have done something about the problem but not to quit his job and another thing i want to point out is that all stores have a dress code/policy that everyone has to obey by. Those are my reason as to of why he may or may not be a hero.

As well as many people may think sammy is a hero for trying to stand up for the young girls i, indeed think he is an hero for that cause but also on the other hand i disagree about him being a hero because all stores contain a clothing policy, “No shoes! No shirts! No service!” That almost everyone has to go by. Therefore he should have never quitted his job for complete strangers he could have spoke to the manager or his boss.
