First, Johnny is with Ponyboy telling him that he might commit suicide if there is more fights. Johnny cries out, “I’ll kill myself or something” (47). Johnny knows that greasers and the socs will still clash, and he tells Ponyboy in a different way not to fight or else he might kill himself. In a like manner, Dally wants to die after Johnny dies because Johnny is the only thing he loved, and he is gone forever. Ponyboy utters, “I knew he would be dead because Dallas Winston wanted to be dead and he always got what he wanted” (154). Dally has no point in his life because Johnny is dead, so he puts up his gun, and the police shoot Dally multiple times. Johnny dies because he gambled his life to save the kids in the burning church. When Ponyboy finds the note in Gone with the Wind, Johnny writes, “Listen, I don’t mind dying now. It’s worth it. It’s worth saving those kids. Their lives are worth more than mine, they have more to live for” (178). When Johnny dies, Dally wants to kill himself because Johnny is the only thing he loves. Dally on the other hand does not want to kill himself before Johnny dies. He does not want to die because he gets everything he wants, and he will not risk his life, even if it means to save people. Dally yells, Forget those blasted kids!” (93). Dally does not want Johnny to get hurt or die, because he will be madder than ever before. Having a value on your life can lead to good choices, or bad choices.
In S.E. Hinton’s novel The Outsiders, Johnny Cade and Dally Winston are similar in a lot of ways, but also very different at the same time. Johnny and Dally have different circumstances and this explains why they have different personality traits. Dally and only breaks the law, but Johnny never breaks the law. Likewise, Dally does not want to die, and Johnny does not mind dying being he saved kids. Nevertheless, Johnny and Dally both have abusive parents and little values on their lives.
