Johnny In The Ransom Of Red Chief
Johnny from the short story The Ransom of Red Chief, is a young rascal that torments everyone around him. First of all, Johnny’s appearance matches his fiery attitude. “The kid was a boy of ten, with bas-relief freckles, and hair the color of the cover of the magazine you buy at the newsstand.” (O’Henry 1) He is also disrespectful towards adults. Johnny kept yelling at complete strangers that were at least twice his age, in a very rude fashion. “Ha! Cursed paleface, do you dare to enter the camp of Red Chief, the terror of the plains?” (O’Henry 2) He also thinks that he is great at being sneaky. “Behind him was the kid, stepping softly like a scout, with a broad grin on his face.” (O’Henry 6) Johnny obviously believes that in his head, he is

Johnny can be described as belligerent due to fighting the gang leader in their hideout. In the text it states,” The shoe met Baldy’s chin bone sounding like a rifle shot, sending Baldy’s head back as though some steel wire jerked it.” I say this because it shows how Johnny is fighting Baldy in a violent way. Another piece of textual evidence that describes how Johnny is fighting Baldy…

Johnny is seen more tough than sensitive in the book the The Outsiders. A piece of evidence that shows that Johnny is tough is “I killed him,” (Hinton, 49). This shows that Johnny is tough because he was not scared to kill him, like how an average person would have been. Another example is “He looked over his shoulder and saw that the door was blocked by flames, then pushed open the window and tossed out the nearest kid.” (Hinton, 79). This also shows that Johnny is tough because…

At the beginning of the novel, Johnny didn’t want anything to do with Negroes. He was racist and unkind to them. When he is captured by Cush, a Union soldier who also happens to be a Negro, he refused to follow his orders, only doing so in the end out of fear of what might happen to his family if he is killed. Later, when Cush wanted to learn how to read, seeing how he was never educated, Johnny refused at first, only giving in so that he could deliberately misinform Cush on some specific words, such as broke instead of brought, eagles instead of equal, and more. He didn’t see how Cush wasn’t that much different than himself.…

Johnny and Dally share one big similarity and that is that they both have abusive parents. Johnny’s parents don’t pay any attention to him or they beat him, that really bugs Johnny. The rest of the gang notices that and they show Johnny the affection that he needs. Ponyboy says “‘His father was always beating him up, and his mother ignores him”’ (12). It is very obvious that Johnny is sensitive about his situation at home. Dally is the opposite of Johnny is his situation at home, he does not care about his parents or if they care about him. Johnny has been so traumatized by his father’s selfish ways that he was too afraid to ask his father for the full scout uniform after his father had bought him hockey pads and a rifle the last Christmas. John didn’t like spending money on Johnny and John was scared to ask him to in fear that he would aggravate his father and cause him to get angry at him. John’s second most straightforward example of selfishness is how he worries that the scoutmasters will think that he’s “too cheap” to buy Johnny a Scout uniform. John constantly tries to make a good impression on other people think rather than trying to make a good impression on his son and strengthen the relationship to the former glory it once was. Lastly, John shows the epitome of selfishness by getting drunk at his son’s scout meeting despite being fully aware of how much the meeting means to the boy. John lets his selfishness overcome his will to regain their relationship and decides to become intoxicated and embarrass the boy, ruining any chance they had of regaining their…

Paternity and the relationship between the father and son reflects mutuality, correspondence, endearment, a test of masculinity, and the collaboration of men. Explored in many medium of literature, in specificity novels, such as The Road by Cormac McCarthy, Open by Andre Agassi, and Mudbound by Hillary Jordan, the kinship between male elder and male junior proves to be a testament of the complexity and fluctuation between love and hate. Dalton Trumbo, most notable for being blacklisted by the House Committee of Un-American activities for allegedly participating in the Communist Party, demonstrates this father-son complexity with envy, nostalgia, and bittersweet moments in his 1939 classic, Johnny Got His Gun. Moreover, the narrator refrains from using quotations or be specific in who is communicating to really engrave the audience and the narrator themselves in understanding the tension and somber now that his son is soon departing to fish with someone else. Murphy's Law states, “Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.” In the case of O. Henry’s book; “The Ransom of Red Chief”, the entire plan to kidnap a kid and hold a ransom, goes, as Murphy’s Law predicts, horribly wrong. The story is about two men, Sam and Bill, planning to kidnap the son of Ebenezer Dorset, a rich mortgage fancier, and hold ransom. Me being very sarcastic, and O. Henry’s use of irony, had me hooked from beginning to end.…
