Johnny acts like a hero in two parts of the book. First of all he acts like a hero in the fire where he saves those kids, anyone that's going to risk their lives for someone else is a so called hero. Secondly he acts like a hero when he is on his deathbed at the hospital and Johnny comes in to talk to him before he goes, and he tells Ponyboy to “stay gold”.
He also gets beat up by his Dad and he is always yelling at him. He kicks him out of the house sometimes. His Mom is not very good either,
she and his Dad always didn’t respect him. Just cause he is a kid doesn't mean he don't get respect too. For a kid to live like that is very strong in a mental state of mind. He is a hero like that to, for a kid that doesn't do something bad is very very strong.
Some people think that Dallas is the hero because he got the fire of of Pony and went into the fire to get Johnny out of the fire. But Dallas is not a good guy because he has been in jail for stupid things, just because he does one thing good does not make him a hero. Therefore Johnny is the real hero because he does good and is a good kid. He also does thing for other people, he got Dallas off cherry and most people would not do that.
This is why Johnny was the hero of the book. Because he told of Dally from Cherry. He saved every single one of those kids in the church and broke his back for them. When he was on his deathbed he told good to Ponyboy.
