Johnny Tremain Character Traits
Personality is not shaped right away. It isn’t passed on from generation, nor is it congenital. We can picture this like moldable clay. You can spin it around and use your fingers to shape patterns or shapes, but once it dries, it is almost indelible. In Johnny Tremain, one of the main characters, Isannah Lapham, gets caught in a web of outer influences and wrong ideologies, ultimately affecting and shaping her personality as one who values the contemporary standards instead of family ethics. Beginning in the opening of the book, Johnny mentions Isannah’s tendency to use her beauty to bribe and capture one’s money and attention. “Cilla loved Isannah. She was proud when people stopped her on the street and said, ‘Is that little angel your sister?’ Isannah uses her theatrical …show more content…
However, Isannah doesn’t give anything for her family in return for her elevated repute, but instead turns a cold shoulder towards those who dearly loved and took care of her. Miss Lavinia wanted Isannah to be like what she wanted to be if she was poor. An actress during that time was similar to prostitution, and Isannah strives to become one after being lascivious in front of His Majesty’s men. “ [Miss Lavinia] was laughing hilariously, as she attempted to fasten two flat surfaces of cardboard painted with two spots onto Isannah. The personality of an individual is perceived as the characteristics that shape and distinguishes one person from another, at least from a general perspective. For instance, John may be described as quiet and decisive in the way he handles different situations. On another hand, we would have Peter who is very irrational. These two distinctive characters would describe the personalities of those two individuals. However, psychologists are more particular and define personality as a dynamic with the inclusion of an organized set of characteristics possessed by an individual that distinctively or uniquely influences his or her motivations,…

Louise’s entire character is powerfully ironic in that she is the furthest thing from a mother. Mothers are expected to be of caring and affectionate nature. However, Louise neglects Isabelle-Marie and treats her like an outsider since she is physically unattractive. Louise only favors her son Patrice because he reflects her outer beauty and she feels the necessity to sustain it by only nurturing him. Since Isabelle-Marie is physically unappealing, Louise does not love or treat her in the same fashion as Patrice. Isabelle Marie finally gains the courage to express how Louise has mistreated her. She exclaims, “[m]other, ever since I was a child you adored Patrice because he was beautiful and hated me, the ugly one. Patrice always Patrice! You never realized that your son was stupid, that he was an idiot…nothing but a beautiful body” (104). Isabelle-Marie’s tone is filled with contempt and jealousy while she spills out all the emotions that she had been bottling up for years. Louise always favoring Patrice due to his beautiful face even if he was just an “idiot” exasperates Isabelle-Marie. Moreover, Isabelle-Marie’s ill thoughts towards her own daughter and disfiguring her brother’s face can be seen as the result of her mother’s intolerance and lack of love towards her. Louise’s superficiality and favoritism towards Patrice transforms Isabelle-Marie to turn into a self-loathing and destructive character. Hence, Louise can be held responsible for creating this dysfunctional family. Rather than loving her children unconditionally as a mother should, she loves them based upon their looks. Therefore, ironically, even though Louise is their real mother, she fits the archetypal character of an evil stepmother due to her discriminate, mean and evil behavior.…

I believe personalities develop over time. A big part of personality is the way parents raise their children and how it affects the kind of adults the children become. And, of course, the emotions we experience are often a reaction to the events we encounter. Speaking for myself I know that a big part of my personality is the way i was brought up. My mother always wanted me to be happy and laugh as much as I could. She always tried her best…

The British naturalist and politician John Lubbock wrote, “Your character will be what you yourself choose to make it.” I agree with John Lubbock, because I believe we choose our character traits. We make decisions in our lives, some life changing decisions, some small irrelevant decisions, that could change our minds according to how we process our choices. Our personality affects our character heavily, our personality tells one everything about us. Our character is also affected by our ability to perceive things positively or negatively. I believe that we chose our character traits by the decisions that we make, our personality, and our ability to perceive things in a positive or a negative way.…

Personality is an individual’s unique and relatively consistent patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving. Learning about personality helps us to understand how and why people act the way they do. There are four perspectives of personality: psychoanalytic perspective, humanistic perspective, social cognitive perspective and trait perspective. The psychoanalytic emphasizes the importance of unconscious mental processes and the influence of early childhood experience. The humanistic perspective represents an optimistic look at human nature, emphasizing the self and the fulfillment of the person’s unique potential. The social cognitive perspective…

Thus we see deceit take place through and through, all for the sake of independence, or for being bound by perplexing circumstances. Johnová notes that in the comedies, along with the cross dressing, the lady usually diminishes her original rank on the social strata. It is seen that “Rosalind, the heiress to the throne, becomes a humble owner of a herd of sheep; the rich heiress Portia becomes a junior, though wise, lawyer; the noblewoman Viola becomes a pageboy.” Thus it is a sacrifice made, with an excusable purpose.…

Personality is made up of the individual’s characteristic and patterns of opinions, judgment, and behaviours in which make a person unique i.e. shy, outgoing, aggressive, laid back. Personality also comes from within the individual (such as their back ground or parents) and remains fairly consistent throughout life, for example a person with a very aggressive and up front personality never real changes from a young age though to old age, he may be calmer at times however in certain situations his aggressive personality will come out, i.e. on a rugby pitch. All individuals are unique to every other human, however every individual’s personality has comparison between each other, and they just react in different ways using the same characteristics as one another.…

Willmore is very sneaky, almost Machiavellian in the ways he chooses to persuade Angellica to sleep with him. He exploits her beauty to try to make her understand that she doesn’t need to demand money from men. His view is that she is beautiful enough without having to prostitute her gorgeousness for material gain. He describes her as “this Heaven of Beauty” (183). Thus by relating her to a Goddess, as something that is out of this world, he is deliberately manipulating her through being charming and through appealing to the consciousness of her female beauty. By this I mean that Willmore knows that women like to be called beautiful. By engaging her in this way, he can cunningly manipulate her through arguing that the money she demands does not equate to, or parallel her beauty. Hence, this demand, in effect, is unnecessary and derogatory to her person. He further utilises her beauty to encourage Angellica that because of her attractiveness she should raise her standards. She should demand more from men in terms of affection, rather than lust, because she deserves better than they give. Willmore states, “[I am] one that scorns this baseness which you practise” (185) demonstrating that prostituting herself is the lowest of the low, and somebody of such beauty does not deserve to…
