Joliet Romeoville History

Joliet the quiet suburban congested city offers a peaceful mix of safe housing, and the industrial look of the city. Stretching to about forty miles its twin city is Romeoville. Joliet was discovered by the French explorer Louis Joliet back when it was Native American hunting ground. The city hides many little secrets one being it was originally named Juliet speculated to be due to the city of Romeoville which was the originally just called Romeo. Named after the Shakespeare’s play of the same name. The city of Juliet’s name was changed eventually to honor that of its original discoverer. In the 1800’s it was known for its lime stone quarries giving it the name “Stone City”. Steel and limestones were two of its main industries which were traded
with Chicago along the Des Plains River. Joliet found itself home to some amazing building such as the Jacob Henry Mansion and the Rialto Square Theatre. Currently Joliet is home to many more recent successes, being the home to the ice cream chain dairy queen and having a hand full of famous actor and musician. Names like Lionel Richie and Jimmy Chamberlin of the smashing pumpkins. From an outside appearance Joliet might seem like a small town, but it finds its place as the fourth largest city in Illinois with a population of close to 148,000 people. I’m located on what its known as the west side of Joliet. The west side is considered the “safer” side of town. It is the area located before you cross the bridge to enter the downtown. My home is close to the one of the three private high school known as Joliet Catholic Academy also known as JCA. There are two elementary school located on either side of the middle school right across from. Joliet is a hidden gem who facing the hardship of returning from an industrial period, but with community colleges getting bigger and new businesses coming to Will County it might begin to see the revitalization needed to bring it back to its former glory.
