Jonas Salk: My Hero

My hero is Jonas Edward Salk. He was born on October 28, 1914. One of Jonas Salk’s famous quotes is “I have had dreams and I have had nightmares, but I have conquered my nightmares because of my dreams.” Jonas Salk was a hero to the american public. Yet before Jonas Salk became an american hero he was a regular child like us. Growing up in the 1900’s,Jonas Salk witnessed first hand the ravages of polio.Jonas Salk has two brothers,Herman Salk and Lee Salk.Jonas Salk decided that he would like to become a virologist,which is a scientist who studies viruses and how they behave.As it says in the book “Jonas Salk and the Polio Vaccine,” “Jonas Salk got an invatation from Dr.Francis to move to the University of Michigan and work on the influenza
Vaccine.” Also Jonas Salk celebrated his graduation from medical school in 1939,that’s also the year that he got married to Donna Lindsay. Sadly they got divorced in 1968. Jonas Salk is a hero to many people.One reason why he is a hero is because he invented the polio vaccine that helped many people.Polio was a very severe virus.As it says in the book “Jonas Salk and the Polio Vaccine,” “Children who got polio would often be taken from their parents by the police, so they could be isolated in a hospital and not infect anyone else.” That is why Jonas Salk is a hero. Jonas salk is my hero.He is a hero because he saved many lives.How did he save many lives? Well Jonas Salk invented the polio vaccine.Polio was a very severe virus that many children or ranging from 5-12 or even adults sometimes would get.That is why Jonas Edward Salk is considered a hero.
