Rodolfo Corky Gonzales was the extraordinary author that wrote the famous poem of “I am Joaquin/ Yo Soy Joaquin”. He was a professional boxer, poet, activist and was the founder of the Crusade for Justice which was an important movement for justice and equality in the Mexican American Community in the 1960’s. For years Rodolfo fought and led protest for chicano unity and was an advocate for racism in the states and also police brutality. However, the thing that impacted the Mexican American community the most is his “I am Joaquin” poem because it brought light into a community that till this point wasn’t recognized for being chicano. Several poems revolving around the hardships of Mexican Americans in the United States had been made prior…
Jose Marti in his quote “To know the country and govern it in accordance with that knowledge is the only way of freeing it from tyranny” (Marti 291) advises the villagers of America to know each other and to achieve a degree of identity. In his essay Jose Marti tried to make understand Latin America that they need to defend their homeland sovereignty. They need to understand that there is a wonderful continent inhabited and that they are responsible for everything related to their historical evolution. They should not be swayed by a “superior race” that does not know them. Jose Marti tells his people that no one can handle themselves better than their own people and that they should not become an easy prey of imperialist powers. He also added in…
Rodriguez’s analysis of American culture falls in category with many of his other essays as he constantly compares it to others, particularly his own. A second generation immigrant, he was exposed to a simplistic family-oriented environment at home and a progressive individualistic setting at school. As his studies took him to graduate from Stanford University with a BA, from Columbia University with an MA, and later a PhD in Renaissance literature from University of California, Berkeley, Rodriguez claims to have realized that his education in America led him to some degree of detachment from his family (Rodriguez 309). The piece begins and concludes with the image of Rodriguez in his car outside his parents’ house, ready to confess his homosexuality to them. This shows the heavy bulk of personal connection that the author includes in his essay. While he goes on to stray from the references to his childhood to include separate examples and general ideology, he centers the essay around his overall life experiences to create a sense of self awareness. Rodriguez’s past is evidently a tremendous motivation for his writing as he constantly writes about topics strongly related to it.…
Janice Mirikitani’s poem, “Suicide Note” and William Shakespeare’s Hamlet both use simile, diction, and tone to express emotion. Both works use these forms of writing to establish a tone of deep emotion, with sadness and despair being at the forefront. “Suicide Note,” being about an Asian-American college student who commits suicide, was written as an apology to her parents for not living up to their standards. Hamlet is the story of a man who has just lost his father and documents the desperation he faces to revenge his murder. Both establish the tone as full of emotion and use diction and similes to emphasize this feeling.…
He believed that while Cubans had the utmost respect for America, the United States was trying to annex Cuba with an ulterior motive, out of greed and desire for more land rather than out of the kindness of their hearts. Martí indicated that Cubans who had fought in war or those that had built a home throughout hostile conditions would rather not have any attachments to the U.S. The second attack he invalidates is the Manufacturer of Philadelphia's false depiction of Cubans as “effeminate”, “helpless”, and “idle” (pg 2). He defends Cubans by writing that, “ fought against the climate; mastered the language; lived by their honest labor, some in affluence, a few in wealth... they never feared competition as to intelligence or diligence...”…
His view were shaped and influence at the early age of 16 when he was imprisoned for five years then exiled to the United States later. As a writer in the United States he formed a group of insurgents to eventually invade Cuba to start a revolution and release the nation from Spain’s control. He saw that Latin America blindly followed the world as an easily manipulated and exploitable puppet. Unlike Sarmiento, Marti believed that Latin America and Cuba in particular, should focus on securing freedom and independence so that they could then preserve tradition and culture rather than blindly follow a tyrannical Eurocentric power. The revolution slowly but surely was successful but not without the help of pressure and aid from the United States. Marti feared that the United States would just be another controlling tyrant to oppress Cuba economically and culturally. The fears are summed up by Marti said, “When a local problem arises, we are less likely to seek the answer in London or Paris. Our styles may originate in France but our though is becoming more American. The new generation rolls up its sleeves, gets its hands dirty, and sweats. It is getting results. Our youth now understands we are too prone to imitate and that our salvation lies in creativity. ‘Creativity’ is the password of this new generation.” (Marti, 9-10) In the end Marti’s fears turned to reality as the United States occupied Cuba in the early 1900’s effectively controlling the economy and almost crushing the sugar industry in Cuba causing a severe time of struggle in the…
In the1960’s, Latin America was experiencing another revolutionary time in it’s history. The theory of Marxism was steadily growing and Latin American literature began to rise in prominence globally. Miguel Barnet, a writer of that time, sought out 103- year-old Esteban Montejo, an African man born into slavery in Cuba, to interview him about his past life experiences. From those experiences came “Biography of a Runaway Slave, ” an autobiographical account of Montejo’s life. From his first memories of the obscurities of nature to laboring endlessly while describing life on a sugar plantation he runs away from for a life in the woods where he feels free until the abolition of slavery arises saying he is free, soon realizing he’s not, he finds purpose. That purpose is joining in on the fight for Cuba’s independence from Spain for a chance to not only gain authentic freedom, but equality as well. Through Montejo’s observant eyes, the reader is taken on a journey that encounters the issues of hegemony, racial inequality, and religion that over time leads to the transculturation of Spanish, African, Chinese, and European cultures.…
Most people would not consider Friar Laurence to be the most important character, what with his many mistakes, sneaky plans, and abused power. But yet, if you look at all his mistakes, and plans combined, he was the one who ultimately ended the feud. Friar Laurence had the most power over both families, being a wise counselor and unbiased in the feud, so he was able to give advice to Romeo and Juliet, who followed blindly. Looking at his role in the play, you see that he was a powerful person, who, by making mistakes, and giving counsel, could stop the hate between two families. He was the one who ended the feud between the Montague and Capulet families, helping them reconcile.…

William Shakespeare is arguably one of the most significant figures in the history of the western world. This is inherently due to his tremendous works in the field of English literature. Son of alderman Jon Shakespeare and land owning gentry Mary Arden, William Shakespeare was born around the date of April 26th 1564 in the town of Stratford-Upon-Avon, United Kingdom. Shakespeare was the eldest of 8 sons in a wealthy family and was likely educated at King’s New School in his home town of Stratford. At the age of 18 Shakespeare married a women 10 years his senior by the name of Anne Hathaway. Shortly after, the couple gave birth to a girl whom they named Susanna and her baptismal records of the time indicate she was baptised on the 26th of May…
