Joseph Bruchac's Code Talker
I think that Joseph Bruchac’s novel Code Talker is a great book. The plot of the novel is very interesting and detailed. For example, during the second half of the book, the plot is kept entertaining by talking about different battles Ned was in, such as when Ned says, “[t]he Japaneses had waited until we Americans had swarmed up the first slope and were like sitting ducks on the wide plain before the next terrace” (Bruchac). This shows that the plot is never dry, and the plot is always enjoyable. Along with an enjoyable plot, the novel portrays many different and detailed settings. One example of this is when Ned says, “[i]f you pushed your hand down too far into loose sand your skin would be burned” when Ned is describing the island of Iwo

" What is Pearl Harbor?"(4). The book I read was Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki. This is what started World War II. During these times Japanese people were treated like animals. They were forced to live in internment camps throughout Executive Order 9066. Executive Order 9066 was approved by Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt, this order ordered the military to place Japanese or Japanese Americans into these internment camps. This is where this story takes place, in an internment camp in Manzanar were Jeanne Wakatsuki and her family spend there time during these harsh times. Well developed characters, excellent theme, but a lacking a more entertaining plot makes Jeanne Wakatsuki's Farewell to Manzanar an exceptional book.…

    Fever 1789 Book Summary

I have recently finished the book "Fever 1789" by Laurie Halse Anderson. It was filled with a roller coaster of emotion leaving the reader on the edge before every chapter. The description in the book fills my mind of how it was back in the 1700's. This book demostrats a good understanding of the environment and tone in the book. At the end of the book it shows real life sections of how Anderson used history into a fictional story. The other book i'm reading is "Night" by Ellie Wiesel. It shows a similiar dark approach to the book's setting. The book is based off Ellie's life in a concentration camp during the Nazi regime. Ellie was only just a young boy and he had to endure painful suffering. Watching the people die around you and seeing your…

When Bill Bryson went on a trip to Luxembourg he was surprised by the difference in culture. Everything was different for him, far more than he had imagined it would be. From the food, to the language, to the types of clothes people wore. He wrote this section to inform the people back home about how different Europe was from New York and, possibly, to gloat about his world travels.…

According to BBC’s documentary ‘Ancient Egypt - The Mystery of the Rosetta Stone,’ the Rosetta Stone was found by French soldiers after invading Egypt in 1798. This stone was unique because it had carved writings in three different scripts: Hieroglyphic, Demotic, and Greek. The oldest writings were the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. No one understood these mysterious writings. Were they were just symbols, letters, or words? Finding this stone; while a great discovery, was only the beginning of years of mystery, confusion, and conflict.…

The three letter code I received was SCR which stands for social (S) conventional (C) and realistic (R). I would agree with the letters I have received. In a work environment I can be social and work together to complete tasks. The other part of being social is being able to share and present your ideas and research well. In my opinion I do think I am fairly well at speeches. The last couple letters are really what describes me. Conventional because if something new is found and it doesn't have much information to support it I would support the old method. The old method works and it is most likely effective. I would also call myself realistic because that is a lot of problem solving with the knowledge I learned. Problem…

When I was looking for a book to read, this was one of the last ones on my list. I wanted to read about World War II – a war that seemed more interesting. However, this book and I crossed paths when all the books I wanted to read were out of stock at the bookstore. I thought I’d take a chance, and I’m glad I did. I fell into a book-induced stupor when I began reading it. After awhile I realized an hour and half had gone by and I was halfway through the book. I was engrossed by the…

Today, these men are recognized as the famous Navajo Code Talkers, who exemplify the unequaled bravery and patriotism of the Navajo people. These Navajo men were selected to create codes and serve on the front line to overcome and deceive those on the other side of the battlefield (Discover Navajo). However, “unknown to many, the Navajo language was used to create a secret code to battle the Japanese. A lot of visitors from around the world are intrigued, yet also confused, when they hear the Navajo language – so, too, were the enemy during World War II.” (Discover Navajo)…

    Taylor's The Cay

The book The Cay is my favorite action/ Adventure book because the action is never ending. It is also a great book because the book is filled with detail. The Cay, by Theodore Taylor is an adventure book that was originally published in 1969. The protagonist in the book is Phillip. He is a nice and kind boy. He can sometimes be very rude. He is relatable because I know how it feels when you have to move from one place to the next. This story was written in the 1st person, which means that the main character, Philip was narrating. It affected the overall mood of the story because the reader could only know Phillip’s emotions and not anybody else's, so if Phillip was really mad you would only feel the tense tone of Phillip’s scratchy voice.…

In the sci-fi novel 172 Hours on the Moon by Johan Harstad, I thought the book was really good and entertaining throughout. The plot of this book was all over the place, because it was written in the perspective of three very different people. Each different perspective on the plot was extremely interesting for each of the characters, even though the main characters, Mia, Midori, and Antoine, lived in different countries. The climax was different and at a different point for each of them, and that is what made the book such a page turner. There were many twists and turns and things that you didn't expect to happen. The writing style of the author was amazing considering he was able to write in different perspectives of 3 different characters…

    The Quiet American

Graham Green's novel, The Quiet American takes place in Vietnam as the French Colonization of the country is coming closer to an end. It is a time where the American's are beginning to arrive in Vietnam with hope of ending the colonization while attempting to "protect" the south from communism and the ever-dreaded "Domino Theory". Within this one novel, Graham Greene has different stories and can capture diverse readers. One story tells a love story between two people from different cultures, another is a tale of a love triangle between two friends and the single woman who comes between them, and there is the story of war, conspiracies, betrayal and murder. I feel that each of the characters in the novels can represent something else and the characters have many different personalities.…
