What fills you with joy and awe?
A few years ago, I surprisingly stumbled upon that one thing that fills me with complete joy and awe. Discovering the art of Yoga (sadhana) was made several months after suffering from a lower back injury. This injury resulted in numerous surgical procedures and crippling pain. While recovering from my third and final procedure, it was recommended by my girlfriend to seek alternative measures in combating this physical hindrance. After a lot of pleading sessions, I was finally convinced to open my mind to this simply …show more content…
art. Signing up for the 7:00 pm class at a Sadhana Yoga studio was the best thing that could have happened to me. It was at this moment in my life that I had a glimpse of what it really means to “let go.” I discovered that the mind is the source that holds all of our powers; the power to overcome pain, hurt, the stress of everyday living, and it also provides the experience of fulfillment, contentment, and internal bliss. This experience provided complete joy and awe as it showed me the doorway to transcending one’s consciousness and experiencing pure amazement even in the middle of the most trying circumstances.
Think about your childhood life. Think about the person who had the most effect on your life? And why?
Similar to the experience of Yoga, my childhood years were richly filled with wonder, joy, happiness, and comfort. These years are credited to the person that had the most influence in my life. This person was my father. Even though he passed away during my early teenage years, the memories he and I created is enough to last a lifetime. He was a man who possessed strength, intelligence, sincerity, and one who consistently provided a simple sense of comfort to his family. The childhood years spent with my dad are the most memorable moments of my life. To me, he was invincible. He was my personal hero who always managed to make everything better. It is because of him that I am the focused, driven, self-motivated, and caring person I am today.
Describe the positive and/or negative aspects of your adolescents.
Dissimilar to my childhood years where comfort, happiness and peace of mind were abundant, my adolescent years were by far the most challenging period of my life.
The challenge began when I received the news that my dad had passed away. This moment not only brought me to my knees, but it also changed the expectations, plans, and possibilities I had envisioned in my head. The icon I had simply disappeared. He was no longer there to give a comfortable pat on the back, daily hugs, or words of encouragement. After his loss, along with the challenges teenage years usually brings, the various facets of my life slowly began to deteriorate. After numerous bad grades and disciplinary actions, I finally realized that internalizing my emotions was not the solution, but rather the source of my disappointments. It was at this point that I decided to embrace my loss, remember his words, and stand tall as a new man. A man, who is strong, determined, driven, and level-headed, just like my
father.
What is it like to be a young adult in today’s society?
The transition from an adolescent to a young adult in today’s society has brought about an experience that is both harsh and exhilarating. Maturing into a young adult presents the harsh reality of responsibility. It is at this point in life when one realizes the pressures of maintaining a livelihood, developing or expanding a career, marriage/relationships, and the importance maintaining a balance without losing oneself. Nevertheless, I do believe that today’s society presents more challenges. The notion of materialism, I believe, influences many to overwork themselves in order to satisfy an immediate gratification.
In conclusion, I believe these journal entry questions allowed for self-reflection. It stirred up a lot of great memories and provided me with new inspirations. These questions were particularly chosen because it was relative to the thoughts I wanted to share.
