I have decided to represent being unemployed more positively than it is usually considered. This article is written in the weekly fashion magazine Look, whose target audience is women 18-30 years old. It would typically have a relatively informal register, written for informational purposes regarding fashion, celebrities and real life stories.
The abstract noun phrase ‘the secret’ makes the headline sound exclusive and will draw the reader in to the article because they will want to know what the secret is. The magazine often announces the revelation of ‘beauty secrets’ which catches the target audience’s attention with ease, I chose those two words precisely for that effect.
The evaluative adjectival phrase ‘happier life’ forces the reader to question whether or not they are happy with their own life with the desired effect being that they discover they are in fact not entirely satisfied.
I used the noun ‘doom and gloom’ because people only know the undesirable side to unemployment, it suggests to the reader that hearing this view on it is tedious and that the rest of this article may offer a refreshing perspective to it.
The dynamic verb ‘enduring’ in the present continuous tense suggests that being employed is a struggle and one that is not enjoyable. The effect of this is that it makes the reader see their own situation in the same way. The abstract noun ‘existence’ also works in the same way; the audience might begin to think that they’re not actually living a fulfilled life if they’re stuck in an office carrying out the same tasks each day. The progressive aspect of ‘enjoying’ makes the reader believe that life would always continue to be that good if they left their job.
First person is used to enforce this article’s role as quite a personal piece. Personal pronouns such as ‘I’ and ‘me’ are used to share other people’s experiences while the second person directs the article at the reader and helps draw
