Episode 1 Terrible Transformation
After watching this video my knowledge on the subject of Slavery has expanded greatly. More information has changed my view on slavery itself. Here are some of the things I have learned and my personal opinion about the video.
Slavery did not begin when the blacks first stepped foot on to American land, it took many years of racial conflicts before slavery came to pass. When Africans first came to America they came seeking adventure, riches, and religious freedom; while others came against their will; captured. At this time there was an issue about having people willing to do labor in America so the blacks took the jobs, upon signing a contract that stated that Africans were to work for four to seven years of labor and in exchange when their time was up they got their own land, clothes, and guns. By 1650 nearly 20 African men and women were freed out of all of them only 13 owned land. Unfortunately when three workers ran away from a plantation was when slave laws started to rear its ugly head. Although I feel as if three workers running away shouldn't be the reason that being African meant that you no longer had rights, that to be black is to be a slave. As the list of racial laws got longer the punishment got harsher. For men who ran away, they cut off their testicles and women they cut off an ear. I was lead to believe that they only cut off their legs as a way to “cure them’’ of running away. Mutilating a few people to scare others more often than not scared them into running. Slaves were seen as replaceable parts that they could beat down and throw away because slave ships came in every day with new slaves. When the farming season was bad the plantation masters would still be making money because slaves were so
