Devin was madly in love with Wendy and from Devin’s point of view she had loved him too. When Devin begins to doubt Wendy’s love for him you see that this book is not going to sugar coat anything. Devin talks about how his love life with Wendy hasn’t ever taken up, he says they have never actually done it. He uses it as a reference to sex. He stems the lack of Wendy wanting to have sex to the eventual break up. This reference to the break up continues throughout the book. Madame Fortuna and Lanes’ intervention about Devin losing a lot of weight is due to the break up, this isn’t an important part of the book is still a reference to the break up. Even Devin staying at Joyland year round is partially due to Wendy and his breakup. Devin deals with the breakup throughout the book almost until the end of the book. I feel like Devin comes to terms when he has sex with Annie. He even admits that Wendy holds a place in his heart that is different than the love that he has for Annie. So you could hold an argument that he doesn’t come to terms with the breakup until years later. Devin relationship issues doesn’t have much to do with the murder investigation, but because of the mutual love Annie and Devin have for each other it saves his life in the
