JROTC was established in 1916 when the US prepared to enter WW1 in 1917 and the two levels of ROTC came to be established. The senior ROTC programs were put into collages their task was to commission officers for service in the military. The junior ROTC programs were put into high schools. Their primary task was to prepare male teenagers for the military service. The JROTC program dates way back to the 1800’s. The founder Captain Alden Patridge introduced the program to the military academy in 1819. In 1916 president Woodrow Wilson passed the National Defense Act into the law, that formally established the ROTC as a national tool to prepare the students for the service in the military. army was the first branch of military to introduce the ROTC program and soon after that the Navy, Air Force, and the Marine Corps developed their own programs. The Coast Guard was the only branch that did not introduce an ROTC. After the National Defense Act was passed the women’s rights act had a big impact in the ROTC history along with many other events that took place between the years of the 1960’s and the 1970’s.
They gave women the right to join the ROTC program for the first time because of the women’s rights act. In the 1990’s many universities dropped the ROTC programs because of the “ Don’t ask, Don’t Tell” military policy. This policy encouraged homosexual members of the military to hide their sexual identities or they could face possible discharge from the military for being a homosexual. However the ROTC program continued to thrive in American universities. In today’s JROTC the military still informs young Americans about the military and all the opportunities the military offers. The JROTC today does not teach combat tactics like they did in the 1990’s. Today’s JROTC allows anyone in the program because the JROTC today does not judge on what gender you are. Today’s JROTC is teaching cadets on how to march and helping them focus on their schoolwork also at the same time. The upperclassmen always check up on the lowerclassmen and how they are doing on their schoolwork and they help check the uniform the cadet wears and they tell them how it should be put together. to take on responsibility and how to be a good citizen. Cadets today are now becoming the teacher, the upperclassmen cadets are teaching the lowerclassmen cadets everything they need to know about the program like how to march, how to read a map, how to read a compass, and they are teaching the cadets how to do an inspection. The JROTC instructors expect a lot out of all the cadets no matter the grade level they check your grades every other day and they call you up to talk to you. The JROTC program makes you feel safe and it’s a program to where no one will make fun of you or judge your ideas. The instructors encourage you to make a difference in the program or make an impact.
You can earn ribbons and medals for different things you have done in the program like raiders, drill, color guard and many other things. At the end of the year the JROTC program has an award ceremony for all the cadets and they get awarded for all they have done in the program and some people get lettered and some get just medals and a ribbon or they get an collage scholarship. All the cadets either make big achievements or don’t achieve anything at all because they didn’t put in any effort to have an achievement. The JROTC program is great and it helps kids achieve academic excellence so they can get into a good collage. There has been cadets who had gone to collage for free because of the JROTC program and it was because of their academic excellence and how bad they wanted to go to collage. JROTC also helps cadets get into the military if they want, the cadets who want to go into the military will go in a rank or two higher than the rest of the young men and women who are going in just after high school. JROTC will help you in your everyday life like organizing or keeping a portfolio handy when you go to a job interview. JROTC is the best
program to get into and I suggest that you join the program.
