Judith Leyster's The Last Drop
At the Philadelphia Museum of Art, I have selected “The Last Drop.” The painting was painted by Judith Leyster on 1609. It is done in oil on canvas and the size of the painting is almost the same like any others that about a foot wide, length and width. The condition of the painting seems to be in a new condition, as if the painting was never touched at all. The texture of this painting have a smooth and rigid touch to it. The painting is consisted of one man is sitting on a chair binge drinking that looks like an alcoholic beverage, the second man is seen standing wearing a flamboyant dress as he is seen dancing while smoking and holding a cup, as he seems to ignore the first guy. The third one is a skeleton lurking behind the man drinking, …show more content…
The painting itself is not just a portrait, it is a genre styled painting, it clearly shows that this isn’t a piece that is about one person or a family portrait. It is not meant to be a devotional piece because the painting doesn’t show anything religious or anything that is related to God, it is more like a personal piece that can be shown to anyone. “The Last Drop” gives the feeling to the viewers thinking that they feel like they are part of the painting’s world, standing there watching a man drinking and dancing, the other man binge drinking, and Death watching him drinking. It’s really quite a dark piece because it clearly shows that the man drinking is going to meet his very end, as Death was holding an hourglass, waiting for him to meet his unfortunate end. This gives an uncomfortable feelings to other viewers for those that can’t handle a piece like this. The painting itself was painted by Judith Leyster, she completed “The last Drop” in 1609. The style of the painting is Dutch style, which takes place in the European region, and it also reflects the origins on what her art style really is. Leyster’s style painting was adapted to Caravaggio, giving her a moralistic themed painting. But due to the strict laws that women can’t attend to the art school, she wasn’t being given the credit for, instead people …show more content…
August” because both of the painting shows that both of the men are going to die soon. One man is seen binge drinking as Death is holding an hourglass waiting for his time to come, the other man is about to get crushed and trampled to death by his own horse that he fell off of. Both painting displays an anticipated death, Leyster adapted Caravaggio’s style, which is the reason why both paintings have almost the same styles. Not only that, it is Dutch art. Both are done in oil on canvas and it is done in the sixteenth century. The human figures looked more realistic than other European art, they are well portioned, the perspective is well balanced. Both backgrounds is dark, so it is hard to know where it takes place, but it clear that “The Conversion of St. August takes place outside in the wilderness at night, while “The Last Drop” takes place in the dark room with a candle lighting the

What first catches the viewer 's eyes are the vivid colors used in the painting. Ultimately what jumps out the most is the man on the right 's red robe. The artist intended this for a reason, discussed later. The room where the men are standing is front lit. Also the atmosphere is not hazy. There is no hint of sffumato. It is very much unlike the Romantic works produced earlier in the century. Rather the edges of the figures and of other objects in the picture plane are clearly defined. The artist "renders every object in the painting with meticulous clarity" (Smith 1). To see this work in person is really quite impressive. The painter has achieved a great sense of depth in the painting, as well as a strikingly realistic quality. The picture taken for this paper from the Albright-Knox 's web page simply does not do this work justice. One 's experience of standing in front of this painting is that of awe. The artist has depicted everything in the scene so realistically, and yet has made it look better than it probably did in real life. Everything in the painting has a rich, glowing quality about it.…

The piece of Art, Smiling Girl, a Courtesan Holding an Obscene Image, painted by Gerrit van Honthorst in 1625 can be seen at the Saint Louis Art Museum. I was initially drawn to this image from across the gallery mostly due to the subject’s bright red dress with gold sleeves, it was one of the brightest colored images in the gallery. It is about three feet tall and two feet wide, it is an oil on canvas painting. As I approached the image, I was still intrigued as the image she is holding is of a naked man facing away, the subject in the painting seems to get enjoyment from this. To me this piece of art makes me curious, I want to know who this woman was and why she is holding that image. The artist seems to be communicating the importance of…

Once I read Lisa McMann’s book ‘The Unwanteds’ I thought it was a great story for two main reasons. First the way Lisa McMann described the setting was amazing. She used vivid details that helped the reader visualize the setting clearly. Second, she created some pretty fascinating characters with interesting backstories. Alex, for example. was separated from his brother who was basically the only person he cared about. Then he got transferred over to another world which was the complete opposite of Quill. These two main things combined make for an compelling storyline.…

Cheryl Swope begins her book, Simply Classical, by introducing the reader to her two children, whom she and her husband adopted. It was not long after adopting the children, who were twins, that Swope and her husband realized they were different. Both children suffered from a multitude of handicaps that made it impossible for them to develop on their own like normal children. These first chapters describe the effort, as well as the various methods, that Swope employed to help her children lead lives that were as normal as possible. Many times throughout the book, Swope lauds Classical Education, as the key to all her children's successes, but the time and effort that Swope put into training her children…

I believe the Poem, The Last Word, by Peter Davidson is about the slaughtering of an innocent animal by a novice butcher. The reluctance of the action expressed in the poem makes it obvious that the killer is inexperienced with killing animals because they still have a hard time committing the action. And we are going off of the idea that no man is innocent, the one executed would have to be some kind of animal.…

The actual focal point when you look at painting, your eyes immediately goes to the line of people standing outside the building. You look to the left and see a man bending down receiving the newspaper or to the right to the man standing beside him with his hands in his pockets with a despair/sorrow look. This man possibly feels this way because there is no one to accompany him for the night or he’s out of money. There is also man with a blue suit and white gloves that’s holding his hands up telling the hold before crossing the street like traffic director.…

Salvador Dali's picture is a totally different setting than the original painting of the last supper. Dali's is set in a peaceful table with bright sun that is showing happiness and the bright future of everyone at the table. With the mountains covered in snow the setting must be cold but the people in the picture look very warm with just their light robes on while praying.…

The colors used in this painting add to the grief that is present on everyone’s face as well. The dark colors seem to provide some sadness to the painting. On the side of the painting you see hues of brown’s and gold’s which are close in shade and to the left you see red, blue, gold, green and white which are not close in shade. However, the red and white colors used in the picture will draw a person’s eyes back to the center of the painting.…

Artemisia Gentileschi was born in Rome on July 8th, 1593, and was thought to have died in 1653. Judith Slaying Holofernes is an Italian painting by Artemisia created in the baroque period, it was officially completed within 1614 to about 1620. She did it on an Oil Canvas. The dimensions of this Oil Canvas are 158.8 cm × 125.5 cm ((6' 6" X 5' 4") 78.33 in × 64.13 in). The location of this painting is in a museum called “National Museum of Capodimonte, Naples”. Her work was depicted by many artists, including these five artists, Giorgione, Titian, Rembrandt, Peter Paul Rubens and Caravaggio. Did you know that Artemisia was raped? And that her rapist got away without any trouble and was released? I just thought he would have gotten in trouble for it. Artemisia painted pictures of strong and suffering women, mainly about myth and the bible – victims, suicides, and warriors. She was the most respected artist of her time. Artemisia had 15 paintings that were at least recognized. I think that maybe more of her artwork should be noticed.…

In this essay you will be comparing and contrasting two different types of paintings. The same subject matter but different ideas of the same subject. I will be writing about The Last Supper, which was painted by Giampietrino, after Leonardo da Vinci. He used oil on canvas while painting the piece of art. The year that Giampietrino painted this picture was in 1520. Another work of art that I will be writing about will be The Last supper by Francesco Fontebasso. He painted this picture in 1762 using oil on canvas. As you can see from both types of arts, that they were both painted on oil on canvas and both have the same subject matter which is the last supper that Jesus Christ had. To both of these painting’s in person, you can go to the Royal academy of Arts in London to see the Giampietrino piece and Fontebasso’s piece is found in Museum Fund of the State Hermitage in St Petersburg.…
