Judy 9 To 5 Analysis
Throughout the 9 to 5 musical there was an obvious underlying message, the terrible treatment of women throughout the workplace. With issues ranging from getting a job, promotions and alleged office affairs. 9 to 5, the musical, is about how hard it is for a woman in the common workplace in the 1980s. It touches on how hard it is to be a woman and even find a job, let alone being taken seriously at the workplace. This concept was shown in a variety of ways throughout the musical, for starters in the first scene when the audience first met Judy. Judy was the newest office secretary, I thought she was just another character, but like Dolly said in the beginning, Judy did not know how much her life was about to change, and neither did I as an audience member. Early on, Judy admits that she has absolutely no work experience because all she had ever been was be a housewife. Luckily Violet, the office manager, takes Judy under her wing explaining how hard it really is to be “a working woman in a man’s world.” For me it was very eye opening to realize that often women had to lie on their job applications in order to even obtain a job. …show more content…
Violet is a single mother and an office manager who has worked with the company for several years. Yet her boss, President Franklin Hart Jr. is still promoting men that are far less qualified than Violet, even promoting men that Violet has trained into the company. This aspect of the show was difficult because Violet had worked so hard over the last several years for this company yet they see her as unfit to hold a position any higher than an office manager.     To start of she says that “Of 197 heads of state, only 22 are women.Of the top 500 companies by revenues, only 21 are headed by women. In politics, women hold just 18% of congressional offices.” She comes to the conclusion that this is a world run by men and that if women don’t jump for more high level positions the world will always be run by men. She blames a lot of this on the fact that women often don’t go for that promotion or for something ambitious because they feel like they will be hindered by their family or they are insecure they won’t do the work as well as someone else could do the work. For the women that do ask for what they want Sandberg reports that “thirty percent of women said they'd received feedback that they were "bossy" or "aggressive" vs. 23% of men.” Women are told to be a certain way and act a certain way and when they try to reach for what they want they are often judged and outnumbered. This statistic will be a reality check for men on some level because this is a social norm that is not a conscious thought. Sandberg gives a statistic about being promoted to manager and says that “for every 100 women who are promoted to that title, 130 men receive the same bump”. Through this analytical lense she reaches out to an audience that is professional and important in the business world. Her vast knowledge of this issue benefits her ethos undeniably. Her overall message is once there are more women in the higher up positions it opens up the possibility for further equality, because a women in charge would be more attuned to the gender issues that occur in the workplace. Sandberg specifically mentions parking and closer spots for the expecting mothers.     This allowed a new category of women to emerge. In addition to the “promiscuous” or “domestic” woman, “Charity girls” were respectable working women who also engaged in sexual activity.
