How Does Romeo And Juliet Change Throughout The Play
In Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet Juliet is portrayed as an immature teenager. Although she shows signs of maturity, it is overshadowed by her childish behaviour. To begin, Juliet is impatient throughout the play. For example, when Nurse returned home and had news about Tybalt’s death Juliet kept pestering Nurse for information. The Nurse was attempting to speak, but whilst trying to explain that Tybalt was dead Juliet became irate, and impatient with the Nurse saying:
What devil art thou that dost torment me thus?
This torture should be roared in dismal hell.
Hath Romeo slain himself? Say thou but ‘Ay’,
And that bare vowel ‘I’ shall poison more
Than the death-darting eye of cockatrice.
I am not I if there be such an ‘I’;
Or those eyes shut that makes thee answer ‘Ay.’
If he be slain, say ‘Ay’; or if not, ‘No.’;
Brief sounds determine of my weal or woe. (3.2.43-51).

Next, Juliet is dramatic which is often a trait of young teenagers. To further explain, when Juliet first met Romeo at the Capulet’s party she was clearly in love with him. At time of parting she did not know his name and wished meet him again. She attempted to get his name by asking Nurse, and while asking she demonstrated her dramatic nature, “Go ask his name. - If he be married,/ My grave is like to be my wedding-bed” (1.5.133-35). In this quote she said that if he was married she would die which is dramatic, and quite childish. Finally, Juliet shows that she is immature through her naivety of love. Juliet has had little experience with love, and that is shown when Romeo and Juliet decide to get married less than 24 hours from the time that they met. Romeo indirectly shows her naivety when he asks Friar Laurence to marry them, and Friar Laurence

    Juliet’s personality and character is one of the most obvious and significant element that has been recontextualised. In Shakespeare’s play, Juliet is described to be more than just a pretty face; she’s smart, witty, determined and mature. She knows what she wants, and she gets it as it is Juliet who proposes to Romeo not the other way around. In the text, she is written to be thirteen years of age and begins the play as a naïve child who has thought little about love and marriage, but she grows up quickly upon falling in love with Romeo. Being a girl from a high social class family, she has none of the freedom Romeo has to roam around the city or climb over walls at midnight. However she shows amazing courage in trusting her life and future to Romeo, refusing to believe the worst reports about him and even willing to shut important people out of her life (nurse) the moment they turn against Romeo. "And when I shall die, take him and cut him up in little stars, and he will make the face of heaven so fine that the entire world will fall in love with night and pay no worship to the garish sun." Juliet’s role in society is very minor and simple. She is the pretty, ‘prized’ daughter of the Capulets and is expected to be obedient of men in their families. In the novel, she receives little guidance and help from her family and is expected to marry Paris as her father decided. This gives a clear example of women’s role and its unimportance.…

    Juliet’s attitude toward love and marriage changes drastically throughout Romeo and Juliet by going from not wanting love and marriage at all, to loving Romeo and wanting to marry him, and then doing anything to be with him no matter how much it hurts other people. In the beginning, Juliet doesn’t actually want to marry Paris but will do it if her mother wishes her to as she shows by saying “it is an honor that I dream not of” while Lady Capulet is talking to her about marriage. Later in the story, Juliet shows love for Romeo and wants to marry him and Romeo feels the same. By the end of the story, Juliet will do anything for Romeo’s love and to be with him as she shows by saying “this is thy sheath. There rust and let me die,” and she commits…

    When Nurse tells Juliet who Romeo is, Juliet says, "My only love sprung from my only hate! Too early seen unknown, and known too late! Prodigious birth of love it is to me that I must love a loathèd enemy" (61). When Romeo sees Juliet on the balcony later that night, or possibly the next morning, he says, "It is my lady. O, it is my love" (69). In real life, two mature people don't know for sure that they've fallen in love after talking for just a few minutes. Their immaturity is shown in these quotes because they think they are in love before they have spent any time together. Perhaps Romeo thinks he loves Juliet because she is the first girl he has approached who seems to like him back. Maybe he just likes her because of her beauty. Either way, if he were mature, he would not think he felt love for her so soon after first laying his eyes upon her. Juliet could think she loves Romeo because she is so used to being kept in her house and has not been exposed to many young men. This most likely causes her to think, since he could be the first boy who has directly flirted with her, that she loves him. Juliet is very immature in suggesting marriage to Romeo, not only because she is a girl, but also because she hasn't introduced him to her parents and because she doesn't know…

    Romeo and Juliet is a story about two lovers, and the forces that keep them from that love. In the story, Friar acts as a reoccurring figure for advice to the two lovers, however, his advice and actions did not prove worthy. Friar married the two lovers, gave Juliet the sleeping potion that lead to her, Paris, and Romeo's death, and despite faking her death with the sleeping potion he waited until the final day of the potions lifespan to inform Romeo; because of his late delivery, the letter never reached Romeo. Friar married Romeo and Juliet which made them fall into a deeper love than before, affecting how both acted towards others. This change is seen easily by how Romeo responds to Tybalt in Act III, Scene I, as Romeo states that his love for Juliet made him effeminate, and because of Romeo's attitude Tybalt fights Mercutio alone and Mercutio dies.…

    Although it is estimated that Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet in the 1590’s the teenage characters show a lot of similarities to the thoughts and attitudes that teenagers show still to this day. This source is a credible article found in the Literature Resource Center database. The author is a professor at University of Alberta in the english and film studies department. This article specifically will give me a lot of useful information. It gives insight into how Shakespeare creates a teenager essence into the characters that does not show up in many of his other works. This article shows how he uses language to create the character’s personalities. I will use this in my research of how Shakespeare uses language to create certain characteristics in the characters of his plays. This will help to explain how it helps in making the characters more personable, and makes the characters easy for the audience to relate…

    Romeo and Juliet is a play of love and hatred. In the centre of it all is Juliet, barely fourteen and still reliant on her wet nurse, yet willing to take her own life then to live without the one she loves. In the short four days, in which the play takes place, Juliet faces more than most in a lifetime. She is forced into marriage, she secretly marries an enemy of her house, her new husband kills her cousin and is exiled only allowing her one night of wedded bliss. She has to pretend to kill herself only to find her husband dead beside her, after which she takes her own life. During this emotional rollercoaster Juliet changes from an innocent, naïve thirteen-year-old to a defiant and independent young heroine. I have chosen Act 1 Scene 3, Act 3 Scene 5 (lines 69-242), and her soliloquy in Act 4 Scene 4 to compare, as they show different stages of Juliet's change in character.…
