Junior is the main character and the narrator of the novel “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,” by Sherman Alexie. At the beginning of the novel Junior introduces himself as a guy born with a brain damage, 42 teeth, and very big feet (shoe size 12 in the third grade). He has large hands, an epic skull and a very skinny body. “With my big feet and pencil body, I looked like a capital L walking down the road“ (p.12, II.28-29).…

Books; are a great way of expressing themselves and letting everyone know their interests. You can usually find books of interest to everyone as most groups have a wide and varied range of books. If a child says one word per page e.g. “car” then you could say “blue car” so you are adding one more word than they are saying, this encourages the child to add another word when talking.…

When I first volunteered in school I did one to one support with reading to junior children. To begin with I would only ask the children to tell me the title of the book, read the passage on the back cover and make their mind up if it was a story or factual. While reading I would encourage them to sound the words out themselves.…

First-world children spend summer days playing with friends or vacationing with their families. But only an ocean away, children as young as ten are forced to kill each other as brainwashed soldiers in morally reprehensible political conflicts. “A Long Way Gone” is Ishmael Beah’s account of his life as a child soldier in the ongoing Somali Civil War. In it, he uses simple language and graphic details to provoke strong emotions in the reader, and hopefully move them to action. His story is one fraught with pain, trauma, death and, eventually, hope for a world without child combatants. It is best to make the last sentence of the intro the THESIS…

We help the children develop these skills by interaction with each other, singing songs, reading and sharing books as well as talking with them and discussing the books that we read to them after we are finished. What did they like most? Who was their favorite character? What stood out the most? Showing the pictures in the books as well as pointing out the many characters to help the children associate a face with the story helps them to learn the name and letters in the characters names as well as to remember it. We also encourage the parents if there is a particular book that their child has shown a strong interest in to continue with that book or series while at home.…

In the United States you probably see kids playing in the park or walking around the street but in Iraq that is only a dream. Kids in Iraq are being affected negatively by the war that is happening right now in Iraq. Besides being affected in their homes or physically, they are being affected mentally. They are learning from what they see, they become what is called kid soldiers. I am writing this essay so when people think of the war in Iraq they don’t just think of the soldiers that are fighting but are thinking of the kids that are being impacted by all this. This essay will explain how kids are being affected because of the war in Iraq; by losing their homes, by not getting the nutrients everyday, and by becoming kid soldiers.…

As my first grade teacher rolls the giant TV station into my class, a majority of my fellow classmates let out an over exaggerated sigh. The lights shut and the screen flicks on, filling the room with the outdated theme song to Reading Rainbow, beginning the reading lesson for the day. From despising Reading Rainbow and getting my first Junie B. Jones book to reading The Catcher in the Rye and Fahrenheit 451, my love for reading has grown to the point of wanting to own a library that one would see on pinterest when looking for cute bookshelf ideas.…

It is very obvious that so many students come to the university library with their laptops and not a big portion of them use the hardcopies that are stacked on the shelves of the library. This, to a considerable degree, could mean that the students are there for the comfort environment that the library provides more than the actual books that are available, and which students can get online anywhere. The library looks like a center for students’ different daily activities, as it has various areas for different activities such as socializing, eating, group work, silent areas and computer…

I believe all children can learn to read in a classroom that is integrated with differentiated instruction and has a safe and engaging learning environment which is rich with a variety of literature to light that spark in the children to want to learn. I will make an effort to get to know my children in order to be able to provide a classroom library with nonfiction books to inform the inquiring mind, picture books for the artistic mind, and fiction books to entertain. All books will be chosen based on their curiosity, interest, personal connection, and learning profile, in order to attract and enchant the young readers into going back to the book area again and again.…
