1. Give a brief description of the person or event you have chosen.
Juno Beach happened on D-Day; June 6th 1944. D-Day also known as ‘Operation Overlord’ was the long-awaited invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. Armies from the U.S, Canada, and Britain landed on the coast of Normandy France, the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division landed on Juno Beach. The beach was littered with German mine obstacles, the Canadians face gunfire from the moment they stepped out of their boats. Fourteen thousand Canadian soldiers stormed Juno Beach that day, their determination; courage and self-sacrifice were the reasons for the success in those critical hours. 340 Canadian lives were taken on Juno Beach and 574 Canadians were wounded. The opposition
on Juno Beach was stronger than any other beach except for Omaha.
2. In what time period did the person or event take place and what was significant about that time period?
Juno Beach happened near the end of WWII; June 6th 1944 also known as D-Day. WWII was after the Great Depression, because WWII happened, Canadians were able to pull themselves out from the Depression.
What effect did the person or event have on that time period?
WWII was what pulled Canada out of the Great Depression. Soldiers needed supplies, so factories started hiring more and more people to help make all the supplies for the soldiers. Juno Beach showed people that Canadians are a force to be reckoned with.
Why is that person or event historically significant and why is it important to Canadian History?
Juno Beach showed that Canadians were an effective fighting force on their own, and were the only army from the allies to reach their objective on the first day. Juno Beach is something that Canadians can look back on and feel proud that their country did that.
What impact does the person or event have on shaping our identity as a nation?
It gave Canadians pride because at the time we were still a developing country on the international stage and yet we were able to participate and play such an active role in defeating the Nazi.
Why did you choose this person or event?
I chose Juno Beach because I think it's a very important part of Canadian history, and that it shows that Canada is strong and it's something that helped shape Canada internationally.
