The theory worked well to some extent though it was later found that determining what was a ‘just war’ and what wasn’t proved very difficult. The theory also went against all Christian teachings on peace and war for example the book of Matthew says “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you”. The book of Mark also states to “Be at peace with one another.’ The early Christians of Saint Augustine’s time naturally wanted war to stop and wanted to live in peace. Spread through the New Testament are the stories of Jesus Christ who is known as a perfect role model for all Christians wanting to base their lives around peace. The New Testament teaches all Christians to live their lives in the footsteps of Jesus, allowing them to find their own inner peace. World peace can only be achieved once inner peace has been found. The book of John states that Jesus said “In me you may have peace” This is why Christians are called to live their lives as Jesus did. He preached and taught Christians to love one another. Jesus taught Christians to pray regularly and keep a good relationship with God. He taught to provide service to others and treat one another as we would like to be treated.
