I realize that it is opposite of the manner in which this school had begun, but it seems as though we have little choice. We already have a faculty unit that is looking to form a union due to the budget crisis, we should probably consider coming back to them with a better long-term plan in place.…
The Vietnam War was the only war that The United States lost. It was a war that caused a lot of arguments within the country. Many people did not agree with this war because it did not have a set purpose. When the soldiers of this war got home, they were not cheered and thanked, they were trashed. Dodging the draft is harder than staying in is therefore I would not dodge the draft.…
The Just war theory maintains that war may be justified if fought only in certain circumstances, and only if certain restrictions are applied to the way in which war is fought. The theory that was first propounded by St Augustine of Hippo and St Ambrose of Milan ( 4th and 5th centuries AD) attempts to clarify two fundamental questions: ‘when is it right to fight?’ and ‘How should war be fought?’. Whereas Pacifists are people mainly Christians who reject the use of violence and the deliberate killing of civilians but claims that peace is intrinsically good and ought to be upheld either as a duty and that war can never be justifiable. However, Realists agree that, due to the nature of humans, force is a necessary action to be used to maintain a just and ordered society. Therefore, since the Second World War, people have turned their attention to Just War again establishing rules that can serve as guidelines to a just war- the Hague and Geneva conventions.…
To conclude, there is no doubt that the conflict of war is a useless encounter that affects many innocent people’s lives, the economic stability and physiological wellbeing of soldiers. It is evident that in some circumstances society makes war to ensure peace, and on the surface this seems rational, even plausible. However, in reality throughout the journey there is a great human and economic cost…
A review of chapter 2, 'The Crime of War' in Michael Walzer's book, "Just and Unjust Wars: A moral argument with historical illustrations." Allen Lane 1997.…
The war was between Russia which was on one side and on the other side was Britain, France, the Ottoman empire(Turkey) and the kingdom of Sardinia.…
Compared to the early 20th century, the wars of today are vastly different. The reasons for fighting, the styles of fighting, and who is fighting are all very different. However, in an age that is far removed from the past, a few things regarding war have remained the unchanged. One of the ideas that has remained unchanged in a time that is every changing, are the rules of war, as described by Michael Walzer in his book, Just and Unjust Wars. Naturally, in a time where so much has changed, there are starting to be a few objections to Walzer’s claims on the rules of war. Even though the wars of today are far different from those of the past, the moral equality of soldiers remains the same regardless if they are associated with being on an unjust…
According to an article in Fox News, the United States has been involved in over 100 foreign military conflicts, but has only officially declared war in five cases: The War of 1812, the Spanish-American and Mexican American Wars, and both World Wars. Any other foreign conflicts, such as those in Afghanistan and Iraq, did not ever receive official declarations of war from Congress. These unofficial wars were waged because President decided to take matters into his own hands by declaring war without the consent of Congress. Today there is heated debate about whether or not the president really has the power to declare war, especially now that President Obama is considering entering the conflict in Syria. Senator Justin Amash, for example, argued that the Presidential authorization of military action in Syria is "unquestionably unconstitutional and illegal." The original framers of the Constitution used divisions of power known as "checks and balances" to prevent one branch of government from overpowering another. However, these divisions of power overlap when determining which branch of government has the final…
As a child, my afternoons were filled with fun activities, whether that be classes in swimming, horseback riding, and gymnastics, or just sitting on the couch reading a book that was just released. Subjects such as college and AP classes were far from my mind. Sure I cared about doing well in school, but my concerns revolved more around the fun activities I planned outside of school.…
The traditional view that most people perceive as the soul cause of the Civil War was slavery. What most people don’t know is that states rights, economics, and politics were the other factors that encourage and contributed to the South succeeding from the Union. However, slavery was still the main focal point that started the Civil War. A politician by the name of William Steward believed that an “Irrepressible Conflict” was occurring and that sooner or later America would either be entirely a “free labor” nation or a slavery base society. Since the North thought of slavery as being an immoral means of profit and the South considered it a way of life, neither side were going to accept each others sectionalists…
The Fourth Amendment protects citizens from unreasonable searches and seizures; however, it does not guarantee against all searches and seizures if there is reasonable doubt. Searches are determined on two important interests. The first is the intrusion on the individual’s Fourth Amendment Rights; the second includes legitimate government interests such as national security. What constitutes a reasonable suspicion? Where must a public official draw the line? How should one address any “gray area” that might arise?…
The Civil War of the United States was a defining moment for the unity of the United States of America and the precedent that it was going to make both in culture and law for its future generations. The war occurred between the years of 1861 and 1865 when Abraham Lincoln was the president, with the Republican Party. The war pitted the North against the South, almost splitting the union to its core. It was on two fundamental issues, one being on whether the union was going to be dissolvable, that is, made up of almost independent states or whether it was going to be unified with a central government. The second issue was on slavery, and its morality or justification considering the law recognized that all men were created equally and should thus enjoy freedom. My focus will be on the latter issue, slavery, and how it catalyzed the civil war.…
No one said being a soldier in the army was going to be a walk in the park. Being a soldier means you must have grit and guts and that you have to expect sacrifice. The Continental Army have been in Pennsylvania at Valley Forge since December 19, 1777, with the British only a few miles away in Philadelphia. We are suffering from all the horrible conditions, and many soldiers, since they have served their time, are leaving for home. I now have to make the final decision of either re-enlisting or leaving. I have thought long and hard, but I have decided to re-enlist, because healthy soldiers are needed, I still want to fight for my freedom, and because I want to support the inspiring General Washington.…
n the sports world people often do not acknowledge female sports as much as men's sports. Women sports are newer and hence the reason for them not getting the recognition they deserve. But the sports world is starting to see how women's sports can be just as interesting and exciting as men's sports can be. I am going to show you some discrepancies between women and men's sports. Women and men's sports should each have equal opportunities.…
The prices of college tuition have increased yearly, and not much of an effort is put forth to try to lower the costs. For example, colleges in the state of Pennsylvania have a high tuition. Moravian College’s tuition is about $32,931, and after receipt of grants and scholarships for one year it will be $22,900. East Stroudsburg University’s tuition is about $6,240, and after receipt of grants and scholarships for one year it will be $12,500. I can barely afford Community College, and I know for a fact I wouldn’t be able to afford any of these colleges or universities either. In this essay, I will explain through facts and opinions, why the cost of college tuition should be lowered.…
