February 17, 2013 Should we place juveniles in prison for a crime they committed for the rest of their lives?
I personally believe that it depends on the crime and its results. Video games, television shows, and movies all display strong levels of violence. They are basically promoting it and it plays a large role in the mind of teenagers. Another factor we must consider is all the information around the crime. Investigators need to uncover all details that could pertain to the crime. A part of me believes that they should be imprisoned because of their crimes but another part believes that they shouldn’t. Although I believe that they need to pay for their actions I’m not sure prison is the correct method. We’ve all heard horrible stories surrounding prison and I believe it is an adult environment. Age of the delinquent at the time of the crime and the crime they committed plays a large role inside the part of me that believes they should go to prison. If the person is at least fifteen or sixteen they are aware of their actions at the time and I believe they should go to prison. A person that is sixteen or older is aware of their actions and should be held accountable for them. The severity of the crime also plays a huge factor in deciding the punishment. If a teenager kills just goes out and kills someone then I believe that they should be strongly punished for that. A child’s upbringing can play a huge role in their actions and personalities as they grow and mature. I believe a personality evaluation should be completed upon their arresting to view how they feel about the crime and to measure the remorse they feel after. If remorse is shown then they realize what they did is wrong and they don’t quite realize the severity of their actions. If no remorse is shown it can either be viewed as if they don’t care what they did or they don’t quite understand it. Many factors need to be taken into
