One issue that influenced the development of states in Chad was the perception of Islam during the 10th century. Arabs traveling from the north and east carried the new religion. In 1376 and 1400,6 mais ruled, but Bulala attackers who were from the area around Lake Fitri and killed five of them. This explosion of mais lead to numerous petitioners to the throne and steered to a lot of internal wars. Around 1396 the Bulala forced Mai Umar Idrismi to abandon Njimi and transport the Kanembu people to Borno on the western edge of Lake Chad. Over a long period of time, the intermarriage of the Kanembu and Borno peoples shaped new people and language, called the Kanuri.
But even in Borno, the Sayfawa Dynasty's troubles continued. Around 1472 Mai Ali Dunamami conquered his opponents and started the alliance of Borno. He built a capital at Ngazargamu, to the west of Lake Chad ,which is known as Niger today.
