There wasn't a day that she wasn't happy unless someone was hurt or something bad happened. She loved to read and create art. She would look forward to getting home so she can ride her bike and go to the creek so she could be with her friends and let her imagination run free. These were her favorite days because she was always happy and so excited to wake up in the morning to go do something and start a new adventure. This was her life every day and she did not want anything to change. All good things come to an end though or so she has heard. She was happy until October 12, 2011 when her dad got stung by a bee. He wasn't allergic but somehow he went into cardiac arrest and had a heart attack. He died for eighteen minutes and went into a coma for awhile. Her whole family was sad and she just wanted him to wake up and be okay. She didn't get that though, instead she got the darkest weeks of her existence. When he finally woke up he had lost twenty five years of his memory. He didn't know who she was and she finally knew what true sadness felt like. She didn't lose her dad physically but mentally. After months of physical therapy and being in the hospital she finally got part of her dad

It was then that she understood that not all memories need to be happy or joyful, they can be both. American University psychologist Nathaniel Herr said, "Being able to recognize that our memories aren't just simply good or bad, but have different sides to them, is a way people cope with their complicated lives," (Weller, 2015). This idea of reframing helped the emotions to work together to help bring Riley home. When she came home the first thing she did was hug her parents. She started crying and these tears were sad at first, but then she was happy to be home so they became happy tears. From then on whenever a memory was created it’s memory bubble in her brain would be more the one color, proving it’s okay to not be happy all the time like she once…

I think this specific experience is important to the author because it is when she first realized that every year on her birthday she is one year older, but she still acts like every age she passed through. She thinks she is older, but mentally she is still that little kid she was before. It says, “I don't know why but all of a sudden I'm feeling sick inside, like the part of me that's three wants come out of my eyes, only I squeeze them shut tight and bite down on my teeth really hard and try to remember today when I am eleven, eleven”( Cisneros 1). This shows that she is trying not to cry because she thinks that she cannot act like a little kid anymore who cries for everything. The lesson that she learned was that even though she is older, she doesn’t have to grow older mentally. I think she is facing an external and internal…
