She was the odd, quiet Abnegation girl. However, during Dauntless initiation, initiates must participate in a multitude of violent activities. They learn hand-to-hand combat, knife-throwing, how to shoot a gun; they basically go through a boot camp scenario. Now that Tris knows how to fight, she’s going to. Erudite took everything away from her. Both of her parents died early in the war and her brother transferred there from Abnegation. Tris is enraged and hurt, and she essentially loses self control. She becomes so absorbed into her anger, she does not always realize what she is doing. One difference between Katniss’ and Tris’ lives, though, is the fact that Tris starts a rebellion because she as an individual is targeted. She fights for her life and the lives of others who are just like her. Katniss suffers in District Twelve, but she starts a rebellion because she is told to. However, the novels still teach some valuable lessons, even if it is executed differently. Both novels teach that love is complicated and difficult to understand. Katniss eventually falls in love with Peeta, after faking it for so long. The Hunger Games deals with a lot of peer pressure and doing what others say to accomplish something. On the other hand, Divergent focuses more on following one’s beliefs and heart. Self control is also prominent in both novels. Tris and Katniss suffer so much emotional trauma, they are no longer the same person they were at the beginning of the book. The different types of government in the books also resulted in different societies and rebellions for different reasons. Overall, The Hunger Games and Divergent are both excellent novels that have brilliant messages every individual should
