One quality I love about Katniss is her unselfishness. She displayed this throughout the first two parts. More importable, she demonstrated in the beginning. I saw at the beginning she had a lot on her plate and is the oldest. She volunteer to tribute for her sister, and she thought through “But in District 12, where the word tribute is pretty much synonymous with the word corpse, volunteers
are but extinct” (Collins, 22). She knew what she is doing and willingly to sacrifice herself for her sister. She even put her name twenty times in order to prevent her sister from being called and to feed her family. Katniss shows this trait multiply times throughout the first part of the book. She usually does this for her family. She has many responsibilities because of her dad’s death and her mother sadness. She is the family source to get better. I found Katniss to be responsible because of her unselfish acts.
Second quality I love about Katniss’s characterization is being protective. Katniss is like any human and shows vulnerable stages. Although, she has a soft side for her family. Especially, for her youngest sister, Primrose Everdeen. Katniss cares deeply for her sister. She even became protective over Rue because she saw Prim in Rue. For example, “And what about Rue? She’s so small, it wouldn’t take much venom to do her in” (Collins, 196). This demonstrates her protective instinct she has. Katniss makes Rue similar to Primrose. Katniss for this reason has associates her protectiveness.
Third quality I love about Katniss’s is strong willed. She survives through it all even though she can’t bear it. She has internal conflict with her emotions being all over the place. Although she puts up an act in order for her not been seen as weak. Katniss even kills someone for Rose. Unfortunately, Rose died and Katniss thinks, “I want to do something, right here, right now, to shame, to make them accountable to show the Capitol that whatever they do or force us to do there is a part the can’t own” (Collins, 236). I found her strong in that scene. She was angry at the moment but, decides instead of weeping she makes Rue’s death scene powerful. Even though Katniss found it hard for Rue to have died, she makes a risk take to respect Rue’s death. I found it
Overall, Katniss is an enjoyable character. The author made Katniss unselfish, defensive and powerful. Katniss makes up courageous women because of these qualities. Katniss is emotional but, that doesn’t mean she should be disregarded. I believe she displays more of authentic response instead of being cold and heartless.
