1. Describe Sunderland’s management and work style. What are her sources of power?
A. Sunderland had a lot of experience in managing large high profile accounts which contributed to her management style. It was these experiences that built her expertise.
She is a professional through and through. Sunderland is investigative and is gifted with a strategic mind-set. She is viewed as a source of knowledge and client insight.
Her insightful critique is admired by even her own subordinates. Conventional and production-oriented, Kay Sunderland is known for speaking her mind out. She has a single minded approach that aims at delivering everything that the client asks for, just as they ask, which sometimes tends to inhibit the creative potential of her team. Her client centricity and work ethics make her seem like a control freak to her surbordinates. She has managed to tread the fine line between being tough and being fair, which is acknowledged by even her team.
Sunderland’s primary source of power is positional power. This can be seen clearly since she wields her influence through control on strategic resources and has legitimate power in the organization. She also does have a formal hierarchy position to the extent that it is possible in this organization.
We can also infer her secondary source of power as Personal power as evident in her reliance on winning in competitive environment.
2. Describe Morgan’s management and work style. What are his sources of power?
A. Mike Morgan, as opposed to Sunderland, is a lot more creative and is known for his content development expertise. That coupled with his realistic and enterprising nature make him a popular figure among his subordinates. He is development oriented and is known for out of the box thinking.     Learning theories have been influential since the 20th century and are now used as diagnostic tools to help identify styles in which learners learn, (Avis et al. 2010). The summary behind these concepts, propose that all people learn differently, and to ensure individual learning needs teachers need to recognize these styles to address differentiation and learning needs of individual within group of learners, (Jarvis, 2006). The key learning theories from research are; behaviourism, cognitivism and humanist. Key academics Pavlov, Skinner and Watson (1973) influence the theory behind behaviourism. They approach behaviourism as a scientific approach towards a desired goal, consisting of reinforcement to shape behaviour. In thus the teachers act as a stimulant; shaping behaviour via repetition and habit forming to create a response. However influential theorists Bruner (1966), Piaget (1926) and Gagne (1985), argue that this style is manipulative, the learner will know how that learning process takes place but not necessarily know why? Behaviourist looked at the environment stimuli influencing response, whereas cognitivists look at the individual’s mental process in learning and how they gain that knowledge. Bruner (1966) believes people learn with the acquisition of knowledge as social process of problem solving. The focus stems to establishing positive conditions that promote the individuals path of being ‘ready to learn’, establishing a ‘meaning to learning’; with initiative and analytical thinking and finally with relevance of self- fulfilment of what ‘motivates the learner’. This takes away the behaviourist approach of learning without an external reward to learning with independent meaning in which you create your own path. Lastly Humanist approach to learning develops the idea of the learners at the centre of the learning process, (Maslow, 1970 and Rodgers et al, 1983).     Two of the assessment activities that I use are Worksheets (or written questions) and photographic evidence. These assessment activities are the most commonly found within my level 1 group. Worksheets within my area are a very versatile way of collecting information from the student, they can contain short answer questions, multiple choice questions etc. Worksheets are extremely valid because they are usually created by the awarding body of that qualification or by the teachers who have read through what the learners need to achieve. Because it is a direct way of assessing, the learners will not “go off task” as the worksheets are designed to be short, sharp ways of assessing that require the learner to answer two or three questions about a particular criteria. Ideally, the learner should be assessed on different occasions, and by different people on each criteria, so that this assessment becomes more reliable. Once the learner has answered these questions to show their understanding, and have had the criteria explained to them, they would have passed that one element within their criteria, therefore making it even more sufficient, fair and reliable. Worksheets are very easy to differentiate depending on the level of learners/ course/ certain individuals. If you have someone in your class who is dyslexic then you can differentiate a worksheet into more picture based learning where possible and also if you have someone who excels in lessons you can differentiate the worksheets to enable more information from the learner. The fact that this can be done so easily makes it fair. A question of authenticity can be raised with worksheets because answers can be very easily duplicated within the classroom, however, it is up to the teacher to recognise that this is happening and stop it.…

    Sunderland is a kind of person who wants everything under her control. When Sunderland was recruited into Attain learning, one of the main reasons why she joined Attain as an account director is because of the opportunity to assume more responsibility and also because she felt more in control over the projects. Also her co-workers describes her as a control freak. Besides, she pushes people to give their best. She has a great strategic mindset and provides insightful critiques and suggestions.
