The narrative begins with Kathy introducing herself to the reader as being "a carer for over eleven year. That sounds long enough, I [Kathy] but actually they want me to go on for another eight months... they've been pleased with my work" (3). This reveals to the reader how Kathy is boasting about being a carer for so long. This characterization allows Ishiguro to emphasize the significance of a being a carer. By indicating how long Kathy has been a carer Ishiguro also differentiate Kathy from other characters. As the narrative progresses, Kathy illustrates to the reader when she became a carer and slightly indicates why she chose to become a carer before Ruth and Tommy. According to Kathy she "just got up one morning and told Keffers I [Kathy] wanted to start my training to become a carer... I was suddenly looking at everything-- the cottages, everybody there-- in a different light", this allows Ishiguro to characterize Kathy as vulnerable (202). Since she decided to become a carer right after dispute with Ruth, which suggests that becoming a carer is Kathy's way of escaping from conflict. Additionally, the connotative phrases "different light" suggests to the reader that Kathy suddenly considers herself different from others; which allow Ishiguro to mark the change in perception. Moreover, later when Kathy begins caring for Ruth, Ishiguro develops the idea of temporarily escaping from fate by becoming a carer. For instance, Tommy states how he "wasn't much good as a carer...why the notice for my first came so early", this correspondence between carer and first donation allows Ishiguro to emphasize caring as a way to postponing and escaping fate [donating]. Although Tommy doesn't consider himself a good carer, Ruth considered herself a decent carer as "five years felt about enough."
