Kennedys Speech In John F. Kennedy’s speech (April 11th, 1962) he states that “Increasing steel prices by some 6 dollars a ton, constitutes a wholly unjustifiable and irresponsible defiance of the public interest.” Kennedy goes on to say and back up the thought that increasing the price of steel per ton will, in the long run. Benefit society. By saying “If this rise in the cost of steel is imitated… it would increase the price of homes, autos, appliances, and most other items for EVERY American family.”, He is convincing the steel companies and the middle class workers that this, is in fact, a good thing. Kennedy does right by addressing society as the president, an authoritative figure with “labels on his back” so to speak. This persuades working class and steel companies to be in favor of the rising price.
1.) Anadiplosis- “..It would increase the price of homes, autos, and appliances..” “It would increase the cost of machinery..” Kennedy is reiterating and emphasizing on the positive side of the rising steel costs so that people will begin to be in its favor.
2.) Anaphora- “In this serious hour in our nation’s history when we are confronted.. When we are devoting our energies… when we are asking reservist to leave there homes for months on end.” Kennedy uses this to place himself among the people. He does this to show that he is also effected by what is going on around him. Kennedy also does this in order to emphasize the ridiculous request that the American people are asking for.
3.) Casoria- “and service men to risk their lives – and four in the last two days of Vietnam – and asking union members to hold down their wage requests.” Kennedy uses this approach to be open and bluntly honest about what’s going on in Vietnam whilst other things are happing in the U.S. It almost seems like he is
