Kent Hurlburt's Purpose To Join The Army
Kent Hurlburt decided to make and interesting and exciting military life when he chose to join the Army. He was a 19 year old Connecticut boy looking for an opportunity. Luckily after his life in the military, Kent was able to earn a job after college as a principal at a small school named Buttonball lane elementary in Glastonbury, Connecticut where he still lives. Everyday my mom and Kent work together to make the school they work in great. Kent was an average teenage boy who wanted to go into the military for an exciting life and the opportunities to come.
When Kent was exploring his options for college, he noticed an advertisement for the army and how it said, “join the military and we’ll pay for your college.” When Kent saw this, he took

All Kent did after the war, was family time. This was before doing what he had to do next in his new life. Getting out was the best feeling you can have. Finally free, finally can transition back to a normal life. The military is weird, you miss some parts but some you feel relief that they are gone. Kent missed only a few part but would not want to go back.
The military shapes you into an all around person, and for some a man. The value of hard work, discipline and your country are the things that were hammered into you day after day. The mission was the chance to give back to your country, and it was Kent was certain about taking. His family was truly missed and everything he had back home would be to, but there were no regrets. Something good was bound to come out of what he was doing and that is what he always had on him mind. 19 years ago, still would have gotten on that plane.
It’s all about your decision and what your willing to sacrifice. What sacrifice are you willing to take to make people safe and suffer through hard work and determination. This is a personal choice and should not be told what to do. He would tell kids, “think, is this really something I want to do”. Kent’s recommendation for this life choice is a no. Decide on your life and the way you want to spend it. You only get one

The Marshall uses this ethos to instill a sense of duty in his staff, the duty to go rescue Private Ryan so that his mother does not have to grieve over the loss of all of her children. A soldier who has lost three brothers makes people feel a sense of indebtedness because of the character behind someone who has sacrificed so much for their country, this ethos brought on from the context of private James Ryan influences the staff of the Marshall to agree with him. This coupled with the patriotic and sad feeling that everyone in the room has after hearing about the mother who lost five sons during the civil war makes all the staff ready to go prevent another mother from losing all her children. “Yours, very sincerely and respectfully, Abraham Lincoln.” The president of all people…

The opposing character traits of Sam Damon and Courtney Massengale may be found within the same person in today’s military. There is a distinction to be made between military service during time of war and military service as a career. When one makes the military a career, one must be mindful of and take care to attend to career progression. There are times when taking care of one’s career, at least administratively, is necessary. As we all have heard, no one cares about your career like you do. The trouble arises when taking care of one’s career becomes the priority. If a Soldier pursues the mission as did Damon, their career progression will essentially happen on its own, i.e. do what you’re supposed to do and do it the best you can. There are pitfalls and unavoidable life circumstances that we all face, just as Damon did, but with a resilient attitude and approach life is manageable, even when in crisis.…

He didn‘t gave up, he stole food from them to survive and share it. In 1953, he was sent free and back home safely. With the third veteran, Hershel Williams, war was in The Island of Iwo Jima and started on February 21, 1945. He wasn‘t prepared, he was on a reserved group not ready for war, but when they got to they island, war started. He still fought but didn‘t know much. His sergeant told him to use the fire gun in order to burn down the pillboxes. He didn‘t know how to use them, but still tried and succeed burning many pillboxes in hours. In my opinion, the men remembering their experiences are really brave. Some men don‘t like to remember this because it was brutal and horrible, but these honorable men were brave enough to tell us. I believe these men were able to do this things because of their nation and their family back home. They wanted to protect others, so they gave everything they had to do it. Also because on the interview they said, "It was my job, so I did it." I think the war change them to become better men. Might be bigger than better, they became loyal, honorable, and brave soldiers. Many years later, they received the medal of…

Wes found himself at Valley Forge after doing poorly in school and him hitting his sister pushed his mother over the edge to send him there. At first Wes did everything he could to escape from there. On his final attempt Sergeant Austin told Wes the direction the train station was in. Wes left only to discover it was a trap and, his chain of command took him in. They gave Wes a phone call home which was forbidden to new plebs. Once this was over Wes became invested in Valley Forge and near the end of his time there, he said “Three years ago I’d been one of the insubordinate kids first entering the gates of Valley Forge. In an ironic turn, I was now one of the ones in charge of them” (Moore 115). That commitment he invested payed off Wes was a ranked member of Valley Forge, served in the Marines, and went to school at John Hopkins University and Oxford University. Wes also invested commitment into the Job Corps with his friend Levy. Wes wanted to turn his life around and support his families with an honest living so he left the drug trade and joined the Job Corps with Levy. Wes finished top of his class in General Education Development training. Once finished with the GED training he chose carpentry as his vocational specialty. While working on a project for his carpenter training Wes said “The house was more than just a project to complete. It was a daily reminder of why he was there. These past months had been the most important and enjoyable in Wes’s life” (Moore 143). This goes to show that when anyone puts forward effort and commitment they can find happiness. Putting forth commitment is important and affects the outcome of that person's life, but it will not always result in a good outcome without…

Sometimes I wonder why someone will enlist to go to war and sacrifice his/her life for millions of people which they will never be going to meet or know his/her story. I know that these soldiers will have the hope that nothing wrong will happen on combat, and that on their return to this country, our society will repay them in a great way for the sacrifice to fight for our freedom, but little that we know, that most of the time is the opposite, we as a nation have turned our backs to all these brave people who not only gave their time and courage but a lot them pay with their life for a war in Vietnam that many still question up to this day.…

It affects the mind and can change a person entirely. O'Brien says that "War is boring"(O'Brien 34). While this is true, others think "It is also mystery and terror and adventure and courage and discovery and holiness and pity and despair and longing and love"(Evans 3). Sometimes the troops would feel like they are "fighting two different wars"(O'Brien 63). This can mean many different things including the war of staying alive, trying to stay the same person they used to be, the war of sanity. "O'Brien's soldiers are people who live in extremis"(Evans 2). Somehow these people complete their missions while possibly not wanting to be part of the group and situation entirely. At one point Jimmy thought "all I wanted was to live the lifestyle was born to, a mainstream life"(O'Brien 51). Most soldiers don't want to be in the position they are, even if they disagree, a part of them wants to live a normal life a be at home. War can seem everlasting. "You can tell a true war story by the way it never seems to end. Not then, not ever"(O'Brien 76). But "in the end, of course, a true war story is never about war. It's about sunlight. It's about the special way that dawn spreads out on a river when you must cross the river and march into the mountains and do things you are afraid to do"(O'Brien 85). O'Brien knows what war means to him because he experienced it first hand. It takes many qualities to be a living war veteran. They…

John Morton Blum retiree of Yale University depicts “combat soldiers as largely disconnected from the geopolitical goals articulated by President Roosevelt.” Each soldier had his own individual motivation entering into the war but all had the same reason to win the war, to make it home. Home was what encouraged the troops to fight. The Saturday Evening Post ran a series asking soldiers what they were fighting for, they were quoted saying “I am fighting for that big house with the bright green roof and the big front lawn”...“that girl with the large brown eyes and the reddish tinge in her hair.” Blum describes the GI as a homely hero, the common good man and the peoples' hero. The soldiers had no visible purpose but winning the war so that he could return to comfort.…
