Kerbs returned home from war without the intent to write memoirs about his experience, tell his story, or teach people. When Kerbs returned home he refused to speak about the war, which is understandable, however when he did chose to talk about it, it was long over. Kerbs then began to lie about his experience, however they too became boring, as Hemmingway writes, “Even his lies were not
sensational” (Hemmingway, 1). Kerbs returned home without the spark, that other soliders had. Hemmingway is most effective when he talks about Kerbs and all the simple tasks he did throughout his days. Hemmingway’s intent in the character Kerbs, was to show he was not like most the other war veterans, he did not want to share his story. “Soldier’s Home” was written in 1925, which interesting enough was just a few years after World War 1, where Hemmingway actually served. Hemmingway most likely connects with Kerb’s. As we see through Hemmingway, he was never able to settle down similar to Kerbs. In addition, Hemmingway had some type of PTSD, which is similar to Kerbs, where he choses to hide away from society. Therefore, directly after the war, Kerbs chose to stay hidden away in the shadows.
Throughout the rest of Kerbs he clearly indicates that he is not interested to form a lastly relationship with a women and would prefer to be alone. This is shown when Hemmingway writes, “ He wanted to live along without consequences. Besides he did not really need a girl” (Hemmingway, 2). I believe Kerbs chose to not find a wife and settle down, he chose to live the simple life. In addition, through the way Hemmingway writes about Kerbs, we notice that he does not want to live an adventurous life; he is content with being alone. We notice a close connection between Hemmingway and Kerbs with their affiliations with women. In conclusion, I believe that Kerbs chose to not in a relationship, he chose the simple life.
Kerbs lived a very simple, in which he choose, I believe. After the war, he came home, and did not want to connect with anyone; he chose to stay in the shadows. Kerbs did similar actions everyday, which included sleeping late, taking wakes, reading books, etc. Furthermore, in Kerbs’ life, he decided he did not have an interest in women, and he was content with being alone. Kerbs lived in his parents home, unemployed, living a relaxing, meek life. Kerbs, chose to live a simple life, he was not destined.
