Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment
1.
Explain the functions of assessment in learning and development.
The functions of assessment in learning and development is to measure whether a person has managed to demonstrate learning. Assessment is a continuous process that provides learners with an opportunity to demonstrate competency, in regards to learning and development this can either be related to a work place environment or academically. Any conclusions drawn from the information gathered can impact a learners futures prospects. An assessor being able to impact a learners future prospects demonstrates the power that an assessor holds and illustrates the importance of standardisation in assessment.
2.
Define the key concepts and principles of assessment.
Assessment is a systematic process involving methodical planning to measure whether a learner is able to complete set tasks which will all contribute to a learner being able to meet their overall goals and objective. Good standardisation of assessment formats and multiple independent assessor judgements result in a level of consistency which is in important in providing reliability and validity of the results of what is being assessed.
In order to ensure the standardisation of assessment there needs to be a systematic system/process or format which assessors can follow to ensure that the assessment process is fair and that validity is ensured. Gravell’s (2014) discusses the Learning Cycle as a systematic route to plan assessment.
The first stage of the Learning Cycle involves identifying what the learners training/learning needs are,
The second stage involves planning how those learning needs will be met and how knowledge will be retained.
The third stage of the cycle is the delivery of the training or identified learning program.
The fourth stage is the assessment stage where the learner will have an opportunity to demonstrate learning through an agreed
