16. a)3-ethyl-3-methylhexane CH3 | CH3-CH2-CH-CH2-CH2-CH3 | CH2CH3
b) 1-ethyl-3-propylcyclohexane c) 2,4-dimethylheptane CH3-CH-CH2-CH-CH2-CH2-CH3 | | CH3 CH3 6
17. The general formula for a saturated hydrocarbon is CnH2n+2, 7 C atoms results in 16 H atoms, and 8 molecules of water.
Formula = C7H16
Therefore the balanced equation is
C7H16 + 11 O2 7CO2 + 8 H2O 3
18. a) This graph shows that the production of oil has increased substantially from 1910-2000, we would expect this increase due to a significant growth in population, the development of new technologies needing significant amounts of oil, a significant increase in power consumption, and an increase in motor vehicle usage. We would expect there to be slightly drops and peaks in the steady increase during certain times due economical struggle and booms.
b) This trend is not sustainable because our current known oil resources are limited. Some people may believe that our oil resources are unlimited, we just need to find more, however without having a current knowledge of an unlimited supply, and the continuing sharp increase in oil consumption over the past century, over time our oil supply will deplete.
c) In saying that, our supply of oil is depleting as rapidly as we are using it. It is important for each and every one of us to make lifestyle changes in order to conserve the remainder of our oil. In my household we are already conscious of our energy usage in order to preserve the oil and sustain our family income. We have up to date and efficient energy systems, we only use heat
