Kids Are Kids Until They Commit Crimes Summary
In the article, “Kids Are Kids-Until They Commit Crimes” by Marjie Lundstrom explains how kids are treated when they commit crimes. She states, “That is, until they foul up. Until they commit crimes. And the bigger the crime the more eager we are to call them adults”(Paragraph 5). This means that kids are treated as kids, but once they commit a crime people want them to be punished as adults. Also she writes that the juvenile arrest rate for murder dropped greatly and the juvenile arrest rate for violent crimes also dropped. There are many cases where an adolescent commits a crime and don’t know whether they will be treated as an adult or not. Research suggests that adolescents treated as adults are more likely to turn out as violent career

Teens are not always aware of the consequences to their actions and they take risks. The general argument made by Richard A. Serrano in his work, Young killers serving life without parole may get chance at freedom, is that juveniles who commit heinous crimes are not fully aware of their actions. More specifically, Serrano argues that juveniles are not fully matured and juveniles should not be charged as adults. The author asserts, “Adolescents, because of their immaturity, should not be deemed as culpable as adults…”(Serrano). In this passage, Serrano is suggesting that immaturity leads teens to act inappropriate for their age because they have not yet become adults. Serrano also states, “But they also are not innocent children whose crimes…

In the article of Startling Finds on Teenage Brains by Paul Thompson, it’s about how many teens that do a crime are placed into state prisons. A young teen being therteen years old of age names Nathaniel Brazill who has committed a crime with a first-degree murder killing his teacher Barry Grunow. As I quote from Startling Finds on Teenage Brains by Paul Thompson “A child is not man” I agree because a child who is a minor is not considered to be a full grown adult. Brazill faced his life in prison and without being able to have parole, as I quote from the article by Paul Thompson its says “ Brazill- and any other young teen- is far from adulthood” it is very true. There has been a big dramatic change between young teenagers brain emerging,…

In the article she says that, “Juveniles who go through the adult courts are 34 percent more likely to be arrested again than those kept on juvenile tracks”. This means that children placed in prison are more likely to become repeat offenders, than someone who is kept in the juvenile system. The paper also talks about how kids brains are not fully developed, so they do not think about the consequences. Finally, this explains why teenagers are more reckless and don't think about what will happens in the future.…

Adult prisons and jails are not constructed with adolescents in mind, and they do not satisfy the needs of juveniles. Officers of juvenile detention centers are properly trained to deal with the specific needs of teenagers. These centers are equipped with workshops, therapy, family services, education, etc. Dana Liebelson, a Huffington Post reporter, wrote that “Staff in juvenile facilities are more likely to be trained to deal with teens. And after they were released, those who had served in the adult system were 77% more likely to be arrested for a violent felony than those who were sent to juvenile institutions.” (Liebelson) Furthermore, according to the Equal Justice Initiative, adolescence that are in adult prisons face increased risks…

Over the past years Juveniles have been fighting in court for being tried as adults. Many people agree or disagree on that decision, are they Juveniles, Children, or they adults? Writers like Adam Liptak, Marjie Lundstrom, Greg Krikorian, and Paul Thompson have maelstrom the ways of the mind of teenagers or consider their committed crimes to be adjured. The things that go through a teen’s brain are starting and unbearable to hear or imagine. Between the ages of 12 through 17, minors have been committing crimes that make their way down to death row. They look at juveniles on how unreliable and inconsistent they are on making bad decisions. But often minors bring unparticular brutally attracting impulsive claims on their behalf’s on their crimes.…

Everybody makes mistakes but doesn’t mean they all should get a punishment that makes them suffer for the rest of their life. Sure, adults are more experienced, but it’s the kids’ life choices and if they did something wrong they need to be ready to face the punishment. If your kid did a crime that was tremendously unacceptable would you defend them in court? Both Adults and kids may realize that they made a dumb mistake, but they both need to get the same punishment. It isn’t fair for an adult to get more punishment if a child does the same thing and don’t get punished much.…

This research paper will examine whether or not juveniles that commit violent crimes should be tried as an adult. Through research, I will establish an argument that children who commit the crimes of an adult should be punished as an adult. Data based on experience and observation detailing the number of juvenile offenders that are housed in adult prisons and jails, as well as the number of prisoners serving life sentences that were earned by committing violent crimes before the age of 15 will be included in this research paper. Finally, I suggest that children who commit crimes that are considered violent enough to even be considered for adult criminal court should in fact be tried in that very venue.…

This completely confuses me. Pro writes, and I quote, "Youth who are subjected to the more punitive adult court system showed higher rates of recidivism and reoffended more quickly than those youth components that have gone through rehabilitative centers within the criminal justice system." It seems that here my opponent has just offered a statistic in my favor. If I am reading this correctly, it proves that minors going through the rehabilitative centers within the juvenile system has had a more positive effect than subjecting minors to the criminal justice system.…

There are some theorists that have put forth the argument that young people choose to commit crime of their own will. Classical Crime theory is an Individual choice crime theory that focuses on individual factors and makes the case that the juvenile actively chooses to commit a crime. The idea behind this theory is that within society there are agreed upon social standards, also known as a social contract (Carrabine et al., 2004, pp.54). The social contract is the desired way an individual should act as not to impinge upon other’s rights and freedoms and the law is set up to protect these civil liberties. A key component of this theory is that the juveniles should be made aware of the law and the punishments associated with breaking the law in order in order for the young person to be able to make an informed choice. Classical choice theory argues that crimes of the same nature should get equal punishment regardless of the history of the juvenile…

A movement has taken hold of our country to change the juvenile justice system, and erase any distinction between young offenders and adult criminals. Almost all fifty states have changed their juvenile justice laws, allowing more youths to be tried as adults and scrapping long-time efforts to help rehabilitate delinquent kids and prevent future crimes. It seems to be plain and simple, a minor in this country is defined as a person under the age of eighteen. How then can we single out certain minors and call them adults? Were they considered adults before they carried out an act of violence? No. How then, did a violent act cause them to cross over a line that is defined by age? The current debate over juvenile crime is being dominated by two voices: elected officials proposing quick-fix solutions, and a media more intent on reporting violent crimes than successful prevention efforts. Minors should not be tried as adults in our society today. This is obvious through looking at propositions by our government such as Proposition 21, which is statistics on juvenile crime from specific cases where minors were sentenced in adult courts.…

INTRODUCTION: There are many controversial topics we can spend hours talking about and have different points of view on. My favorite one is the one that argues if under aged kids should be tried as adults or not. This topic has so many different points of views that there will never be an exact answer on if children should be tried as adults or not. This topic is very interesting because every case is different, meaning that because there are different variables that led kids to get in trouble we can never say that all kids should be treated as adults because their level of crime is never the same. Viewing each case as its own is the only way that someone can decide on whether or not they can be seen as kids or adults, I don’t think this topic should be generalized into a yes or no. Of course, everybody has different views on things and in these next few paragraphs I will take into consideration different people’s opinions as well as why some people think this should be a firm yes or no.…

1899 was the first time we ever saw a juvenile court in America. During this time it was very common for children to be charged as adults. The courts believing by the age of seven, a child understands their full intents. Fast fowarding to 2015, we frown upon this concept. We have seen many cases in recent years where the courts have tried to charge children as adults. But many court cases have be denied. By the late 1980’s to early 1990’s murder rates rise within juveniles. This brought a new legislation that allowed many juveniles to be transferred to criminal court. On average 13,000 juveniles are transferred to criminal courts each year. What is making America change their mind on this topic? Children who commit adult crimes, are they actually…

Crimes of the youths, refers to the failure of a youth to perform an act specifically required by law. It has been reported that, along the years, the rate of youth crimes has shown a tendency to increase. Truly, from the case of Mary Bell to the Virginia Tech Massacre, every time public awareness and anger was arisen. At the same time, more and more young criminals are exposed to the public limelight, and we begin to wonder what indeed is happening to our youths nowadays. Most of the time, while the young generation is blamed for their rebelliousness and the public shows great solicitude for the punishments given, I think it comes the time for us to stop blaming juveniles for their mistakes and put responsibility where it belongs. Just as what Brondi Dollar said, ‘They are not juvenile delinquents. These are children who have been taken from homes that were bad for them.’ Society, functioning as a ‘home’ for its people to grow up and spend the whole life in, should therefore be blamed for its dereliction of duty of taking care of the toddlers who just take their first step in the life-long journey. Indeed, the media, the culture, and the education system of a society all take roles in the propagation of youth crimes.…
