Othello is more of a sinner because in the end he is the only one who killed Desdemona. Othello kills Desdemona because he thinks Cassio and Desdemona are having an affair. Othello talks to Desdemona in her last moments of life. Othello’s proof to kill Desdemona was the handkerchief. “A murder which I saw a sacrifice, I saw the handkerchief.” (5.2.174) the importance in this quote is that it was the only real proof Othello had that the supposed love affair was happening. The handkerchief in a way was the symbol of Othello and Desdemona’s love. Now since she gave the handkerchief to Cassio that gives Othello the right to kill Desdemona.
Othello is the sinner in the story. When he was alone with Desdemona he tells her she is going to die, she begs him to let her explain, but Othello responds “…cannot remove nor choke the strong conception that does groan withal. Thou art to die.” (5.2.64) this is ironic because Othello kills Desdemona because she “sinned” against him when he committed a bigger sin, murdering Desdemona. Othello did not value Desdemona’s word. Othello recognizes and accepts his errors at the end which made him believe his only punishment was death. In the end, Iago succeeded in ruining Othello’s life.
Iago is the character that made the lies and slowly but surely plotted. Everyone in town knows that Iago is honest. Therefore, Othello has no real reason to doubt Othello. “Iago is most honest” (2.3.7) when in reality Iago can’t stand the thought of Othello being happy. This is the most ironic part in the play to me because Iago is the least honest man in the whole play. “the moor is of a free and open nature that thinks men honest and seem to be so, and will tenderly be led by thee’ nose as asses are” (1.3.392) this shows how Othello lacks hubris. Othello’s blind trust of Iago and his lack of understanding of Desdemona shows that he still had a mindset of a war time soldier-trust no one but your male companions.
