King Afonso Research Paper
1.. According to King Afonso of the Kingdom of Kongo, the Portuguese had many detrimental effects on Afonso’s kingdom. One of these negative effects on his kingdom was the vast spread of disease. The Portuguese had experienced many different bacteria than the African people. When they came to the Kongo, the Portuguese had brought over those germs and they ended up getting sick very easily. King Afonso was very upset with tons of his people getting sick and sometimes even dying. Instead of finding cures himself, he decided to write many letters to the leader of Portugal. In one of the many letters sent to the Portuguese king, Afonso pleaded that, “...your highness should know how your kingdom is being lost in so many ways that it is convenient to provide for the necessary remedy…” King Afonso is telling the King of Portugal how important it is that diseases should …show more content…
King Afonso sends many letters directly to the king of Portugal instead of going to anyone else for help. Instead of going to a vassal, he went straight to the king to get what he needed immediately. If he had went to a knight or other lower class person in the Portuguese kingdom, it could take months for the king to hear about Afonso’s needs. In one letter, Afonso wrote, “We should ask in our letters for anything we need, and that we shall be provided with everything, and as the peace and the health of our kingdom depend on us.” In this letter, he is directly asking for resources and supplies from the King. He also is stating that if either king needs anything, they will get it from each other. Since the King Afonso of the Kongo can get his supplies instantly, he can give the goods to his people. In another piece of a letter, King Afonso says, “We beg of your Highness as a great favor to do this for us…” Afonso is using emotions to persuade the king of Portugal to send him his needs and wants. He is begging for the supplies needed in the Kongo kingdom and wants to receive them now other than

Afonso promoted the introduction of European culture in his kingdom by adopting Christianity as the state religion, imitating the etiquette of the Portuguese royal court, and using Portuguese as the language of state business. His son Henrique was educated in Portugal and returned to serve as West Africa’s first black Roman Catholic bishop. European firearms, horses, and cattle, as well as new foods from the Americas, became common in Kongo, and Afonso dreamed of achieving a powerful and prosperous state through cooperation with the Europeans. By the time of his death, however, his kingdom verged on…

The theory Advantages of Disadvantages states that people can analyze their disadvantages and the find the correct methods to use against opponents (Gladwell 18). Upon King Kamehameha’s reign of success, it was not just given to him and he was not always the one to be favored, many times Kamehameha himself, in fact went into a battle as the underdog and used his disadvantages…

Why is September 16th Mexican Independence Day? What happened on that date? (Include in your answer a summary of two Catholic priests: Miguel Hidalgo and Jose Maria Morelos). Notably, September 16th is Mexican Independence Day because revolutionary activity was already a pattern throughout Mexico, “but the cause celebre of independence was El Grito de Dolores (The Cry of Pain), a proclamation made by Miguel Hidalgo, a parish priest, on September 16, 1810 (Vigil 112). Furthermore, Hidalgo was a Criollo, a Jesuit, and fairly well off, but most importantly he felt a concern for less-fortunate members of society, so he could be characterized as an activist puro (Vigil 112). King Alfonso is the new ruler of Kongolese society after his father has passed away in 1506; Alfonso claimed the throne and ruled until 1542. During his ruling he sent letters to their new ally’s king, King Jodo III of Portugal. It states that the Kongo needs aid from the Portuguese. The Kongo desires secular aid such as schools, and medicinal treatment. And because the Kongo is now a in an Africanized Christian state they need Wine and Flour to perform the holy sacrament, The Eucharist. They also seek a trained priest who can alter the form of that ordinary flour and wine into the body and blood of Christ. And of course along with the schools people to teach the students inside of them. They also want Pharmacists in order to heal the people from the diseases with herbs. Along with all the good trading with Portugal the Kongolese society is doing, comes the bad trading that poorly inflicts the state of them. The Kongo king does not want merchants or wares he only wants the priests, teachers, wine and flour. He does not want the merchants trading slaves in the country corrupting his Good-hearted Christian people. Also the Kongo king has noticed that when a merchant from Portugal is let in they sneak in and actually steal a person from their relatives and sell them to the white men to work, and the Kongolese didn’t like this one bit because they want their people to the be free in the kingdom and it cannot be done if they are becoming slaves. In reaction to this the king has made a law were every Whiteman living in the kingdom wanting to purchase a slave must inform 3 noblemen and will investigate if the slaves they are buying are free men or captive. And if they are being captive then there will be no further doubt but if they were free once then the buyer will lose all of the slaves he has…
