to his advantage to help him become successful and completely fulfill the prophecy of uniting the islands. This particular story, relating Kamehameha to Gladwell's “Advantages of Disadvantages” takes place long before Kamehameha was known as King. But this particular Battle placed Kamehameha above all chiefs, this is the day where Kamehameha stepped up and lead like a true leader after the main chief was shot and killed by Captain Cook’s men. Kamehameha the youngest chief of the Big Island, conducted a battle scheme that took down Captain Cook, despite being at a major disadvantage technology wise.
Captain Cook first set foot on an island called Kaua’i which is part of the Hawaiian chain, on this day Cook was credited for the discovery of the Hawaiian islands, he was the first westerner to discover the islands in 1778. He was greeted by the Hawaiians of Kaua’i who were prepared for an all out battle, luckily for Cook he and his men took a recent trip over to Tahiti and learned some of their language which was similar to the Hawaiian language where the two ethnic groups could communicate. Lono a god that the Hawaiian islanders believed in, Captain Cook actually claimed to be that god.
After meeting with King Kalaniopu’u and staying a few days on the Big Island, Cook attempted to sail out to Canada, but due to high winds and rough seas, a mast was broken on Cook’s Ship and they were forced to turn back to Kealakekua Bay.
As the mast of the ship was being pulled up onto shore, one of the Hawaiian commoners was spotted making off with a pair of blacksmith tongs, in response Cook’s men went after the Islander only to notice that they were being mocked and laughed at by the Hawaiians. As all of this is happening one of the smaller boats disappears from the bay, and suspicion and tension began to rise between Cook and the Hawaiians. Gunfire rang out, killing a Hawaiian commoner, that’s where the friendship of Cook and the Hawaiians came to an end. Cook attempted to go to the shore and capture King Kalaniopu’u and hold him hostage, although his attempt was not successful, a crowd gathered in the bay when a shot rang out! Down on the water Chief Kalimu was shot and killed in his canoe, that's when the battle with Cook began. Cook's men were smart they stayed in their boats and shot guns and cannons at the Hawaiians who were attempting to take them out, Chief Kalimu now dead, the youngest chief now has to take control of the battle. This young Chief was
Kamehameha.
