On October 7, 1763, King George III issued a proclamation that forbade colonial settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains. When he did this, he hoped to satisfy the Native Americans who had sided against him during the recently concluded Seven Years’ War.
Purpose
Britain had control over all of North America to the east of the Mississippi River. The colonists wanted to move westward toward the Ohio Valley. King George III declared all lands west of the Appalachian off-limits to colonists. As an excuse protecting colonists from Indian rampages, the proclamation was also made to protect Native Americans from increasingly frequent attacks by American settlers.
