In an exclusive interview with King Theseus, we learn groundbreaking information about how the king really thinks. He not only is the most magnificent ruler of Athens, but we learn that he is also a person, just like you and me. He may be more relatable to us than we perceive him to be. He has real emotions and feelings, while also being all-powerful.
First, we respectfully asked King Theseus how he felt when greeting and meeting new people. His thoughtful response, “Where I have come, great clerks have purposed to greet me with premeditated welcomes... not paying me a welcome,” (149). After briefly explaining, we see that King Theseus is constantly meeting people that glorify and revere him just because he is a ruler. It must be difficult to know who your real friends are and who are just giving him special treatment. It seems exhausting to be constantly bombarded by people with extravagant impersonal greetings.

King Theseus is all-powerful, strong, and magnificent. Yet, he is more than that. King Theseus is also caring, personable, and most importantly, a person with feelings. We learned he feels sad and upset when people treat him with excessive extravagance; he prefers when people treat him with respect but are still simple and casual. Most people probably share in this opinion and wish for the same treatment towards them. Thus, our king is actually relatable.
