‘The way I saw it’
Inspired from the book, ‘Kite Runner’ By Khaled Hossein
It’s a hot and stuffy afternoon which didn’t help with the disgusted and hurt feeling I felt inside. I never thought that I would be betrayed by my best friend Amir maybe he was scared of being hurt by Assef- I don’t blame him for being afraid but I wish that he helped me that day. I was hanging up the washing when I heard a voice say, “Come with me.” To my surprise I turned to see Amir and I was so happy to see him, but at the back of my mind I was also curious about what he wanted to show me. I followed him to the hillside where he used to read all his stories to me. He was a talented writer and I enjoyed listening to his stories all the time.
He already made it to the top of the hill, “wait!” I shout desperately trying to catch my breath. I finally reach the top and there is an awkward silence between myself and Amir while we stand there looking at each other. I try to make conversation by asking how his school was and what he was learning. I am always fascinated by what he had learned at school and sometimes it made me wish that I went to school too. It is getting too hot to think of things to say to him, so I think it is best to stay quiet. We then move to sit under the pomegranate tree to cool down.
However the ground is far too hot to sit on and we decide to stand under the tree. We stand there again in silence- not a word was said. I could tell that Amir wanted to say something to me but he didn’t say anything. Maybe he wants to talk about what happened and that he was sorry for abandoning me with Assef. I look up to find him looking around searching for a fresh pomegranate I think he must be thirsty from this hot weather. Finding one he asks, “What would you do if I hit you with this?”
His question stunned me; it is not like him to say this. Maybe it’s a joke or a test to see how loyal I am to him. I’m always loyal to Amir and would never do anything to hurt him. Without saying a word I suddenly started to feel sticky and I look down to see the fresh juices of the fruit covering me. I freeze.
Before I knew it Amir Agah is throwing pomegranates at me one by one. I sense fear and guilt from him which made me upset. He starts to shout at me and telling me to hit him, but I didn’t want to do that. His shouts got louder and I want him to stop because now my top is drenched from the juices. The only way to get him to stop was to do something; I didn’t know what to do. Suddenly the sound of his shouts began to muffle out and I find myself grabbing a fruit from the ground and I press it firmly against my forehead. “Do you feel better now?” I say. I run all the way back home and quickly wash up before my father sees me.
It is nightfall, and I need time to think about what happened. Amir is not himself today it wasn’t like him to act out this way. I decide to sleep it off and hope for a better day tomorrow, because it’s Amir’s birthday.

Amir is very selfish and only does things for his own benefit. He did not have the courage or strength to step in and save his friend in the alley from Assef. He made the choice to betray his friend. As Hassan stood his ground in the alley and chooses to honor his promise to Amir and return the kite to him, Amir stood silent at the end of the alley and watched the beating and rape of his friend Hassan. The following quotation emphasizes how Amir is unworthy of Hassan’s loyalty: “I had one last chance to make a decision. One final opportunity to decide who I was going to be. I could step into that alley, stand up for Hassan – the way he’d stood up for me all those time in the past – and accept whatever would happen to me. Or I could run. In the end, I ran.” (82). Amir’s betrayal continues, as he later decides that he no longer wants Hassan and his father in the household, so he decides to set up Hassan and accuse him of stealing. “I went downstairs, crossed the yard, and entered Ali and Hassan’s living quarters by the loquat tree. I lifted Hassan’s mattress and planted my new watch and a handful of Afghani bills under it.” (110). Amir betrays Hassan by trying to have his friend fired for stealing. Hassan took the blame to keep Amir out of trouble. This…

From the start and through his death, Hassan remains the same: loyal, forgiving, and good-natured. Hassan grew up with a very particular role in life. He prepares Amir’s breakfast and collects his books while Amir gets ready for school. Rather than going to school as well, Hassan stays and helps his father, Ali, get groceries and complete their chores. Instead of receiving his education, he stays home and lives as a servant to those richer than he. Hassan learns early on in life that it is his duty to sacrifice himself for others. As a result of growing up this way, Hassan is not prone to envy and is even happy with the way he lives; the life he has. Even after a traumatic, violent past, he remains innocent from the beginning and to the end of his life. There is no way for Hassan to become ‘good again’ because he had never been bad. Hassan’s ability to suffer without becoming bitter, his integrity, and what his character truly shows us that there is no way for him…

The United States should be involved in the affairs of other countries because what we do for other countries, we get back in return. In The Kite Runner, the Taliban take over Afghanistan and ruled most of it including its capital, Kabul. Since no one could stop the Taliban, many devastating things occurred. “I saw a dead body near the restaurant. There had been a hanging. A young man dangled from the end of the rope tied to a beam, his face puffy and blue, the clothes he’d worn on the last day of his life shredded, bloody. Hardly anyone seemed to notice him” (Hosseini 259). This quote puts a dreadful image in the reader’s mind of how everyone is so used to what the Taliban are doing, that hardly anyone notices it. If America got involved…

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hossenini deals primarily with the theme of guilt and redemption and subtly approaches the correlations between religion and violence through these main themes. The novel centers on the relationship between the narrator Amir and his friend/servant Hassan and Amir’s guilt when he witnesses an act of violence done to Hassan that he fails to intervene in. This personal conflict ties into the narrator’s experiences with religion as he attempts to redeem himself. Through this aspect of the novel, we can see the personal journey of finding the true Self through traumatic experience and the dichotomy of religion as a tool to explain suffering and violence as well as a justification for violence.…

Amir, is the central character and is shaped both in character and intellect by power. He is privileged and wealthy, but also steeped in jealousy and cowardice. He is selfish and guilty of abhorrent behaviors. The one positive strength Amir has is his friendship with Hassan. Considered best friends this is a friendship that is generally one-sided with Hassan showing the loyalty and trust. There is an ongoing conflict for this friendship because Amir shares paternal heritage with Hassan. Hassan was born into servitude and thus Baba, the boys’ father, cannot lay claim to Hassan’s heritage. The Afghan traditions and culture pose a conflict for Baba regarding Hassan. Hassan for his part is loyal, forgiving, and an all-around pleasant person to be with. The two boys are drawn to each other naturally. Hassan is the family servant and never wavers in his loyalty to the family even with the knowledge that he should be considered part of it. At the same time, Baba struggles with his own morals and the rigid Afghani traditions. He is proud and determined but also emotionally detached from Amir. Amir feels the detachment deeply and constantly strives to receive Baba’s affection.…

Hello Mr.Hosseni. In my English class, we just got finished with your novel The Kite Runner.Your book, has been the best school book I have ever read in English class. I was very surprised of all the information that I learned about the political struggle in Afghanistan, and especially surprised that this was a story of your childhood in Kabul from then on.From your childhood, Kabul seemed to be a very wonderful place. I was fascinated by the fact that instead of supermarkets, you had a bazaar to get all of your groceries. I also found it interesting that unlike The United States, the season everyone looked forward to was school offs, and exciting seasons of winter opposed to Summer. Aside from all of the facts that I learned, your book has truly touched my heart. Although Amir’s cruel charecteristics had made me angry in the beginning of the story, by reading the last page his bravery had left me in tears. In the beginning, I thought BaBa was a hero of some sorts, but you even over rid that. I could never imagine returning to a country under the circumstances you had too; but you did it anyway when you were well of aware of the consequences you could have suffered, a very high chance at that too. Although you said Amir was a coward, I believe not even the bold could have done what you did. You really did what would be considered the impossible, and I admire you for that. You have showed me that if you want something, you must do whatever it takes to get there; and to always try no matter how unrealistic it seems.Although BaBa and Rahim Khan had some-what shunned you for your treatment to Hassan as a child, your journey would have made them more than proud. You not only taught me the culture of Afagnistan, but the devestation for a power struggle. You even writing this novel was brave, because it exposed the true horrors of the Taliban. Reading your book, encouraged me to stand against terrible and totalitarian governments like the…

The Kite Runner is a book all about the different choices Amir makes. Some choices he makes are good and some are bad. If Amir had chosen to make the right choices at the right time, he might not have gone through all he had to go through in The Kite Runner. In the end of the book, The Kite Runner, Amir and Soraya live with Sohrab in their house in California. Amir teaches Sohrab how to fly a kite and goes to catch the kite for Sohrab like Hassan had done for Amir. The ending of the book however had tuned out good for Amir. The Kite Runner does have a happy ending because Amir repaid Hassan for his loyalty at the end of the book by getting Sohrab out of Afghanistan and giving him a new life.…
