Kobe Bryant Personality
Kobe Bryant, one of the greatest basketball players ever, once said, “These young guys are playing checkers. I’m out there playing chess.” Like many of Kobe’s adversaries, I too felt like I was playing checkers. In school, much like in basketball, there are people who have mastered the game. These are the students that do not panic when given a writing assignment or research paper. However, I am not one of these students. When given the assignment to write a research paper, my body fills with fear and anxiety. This is what happened when I was given my first research paper at Hofstra, but something was different. When the professor finished explaining the dreaded assignment, a man introduced himself. Unannounced to me, this man would change the fearful way I viewed research papers. The man introduced himself as Professor Caniano. I had no interest in hearing what he had to say. My mind remained focused on the research paper. As Professor Caniano continued to speak, his welcoming personality caught my attention. When he was speaking, he sounded like a friend offering advice. It seemed as though he understood the fear and wanted to tackle it with me. He spoke about finding good databases and research to include in the paper. Once …show more content…
Students can use the service they provide to help their school work. Before Professor Caniano came into my class to speak on the service he provides, I was unaware Hofstra had this. Luckily I learned about this at such an early point in my education at Hofstra and will be able to take advantage of it. When given the assignment to, “Brag about a service that got you well” (KP), I had a clear service to write about. I was fortunate enough to find this service and be the beneficiary of the service. All students should take advantage of the help they provide. It is as though one is cheating, but this is acceptable. The university provides the cheat for students and students would be foolish to not use

Like me, many students believe that procrastinating and writing a one-draft paper is the best way to approach a writing assignment; however, research claims this method has numerous negative effects on the individual. Therefore, other students and I should learn to begin their writing process in advance in order to avoid the feelings of fatigue, guilt, and anxiety after turning in an important…

Davis and Shadle state, “In this essay, we will present a series of alternatives to the modernist research paper: the argumentative research paper, the personal research paper, the research essay, and the multi-genre/media/disciplinary/ cultural research paper” (418). Davis and Shadle also have techniques by using rhetorical situations. The described situations help the reader understand how to create a successful research paper and useful tips on what and what not to do. Davis and Shadle include many different examples from other researchers in their article. This helps back up the information that they are trying to reach out to the readers. They also help by including ways of writing that I can make connections with as well as other readers like me. For example Posusta, a tutor at UCLA, comes up with ways for a researcher to make the process work well in a short period of time for procrastinators rather than insisting on using a longer process. Davis and Shadle further his purpose by explaining, “To better invent, Posusta had to learn the academy’s customs, rules, and practices” (419).…

Upon hearing that this topic was about heroes, my mind became flooded with ideas and concepts. Family members, historical figures and celebrities had all come to mind. However, this person was the first name that came to mind. This man, depending on your prospective, is either a hero or a villain. To many, he and his qualities are basically the definition of a hero. He has a no-quit attitude, a passion, and a fire in his heart. He has the heart and soul of a true warrior and champion. He has never run, he has fought through the down times, the lows, to achieve greatness, and reach those highs, those great moments. This man is a rare find in this world, nobody will ever be like him. He has a killer instinct, or “Mamba Mentality”, and that is…

My experience with research writing has dated back to my years in high school. The sharp contrast in the ways I’ve learned to write an effective essay has become clear over my years in college. When reflecting back to my high school time the research paper that was the most glaring was the one done on The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. The teacher had given us a choice of different topics to choose from and I vividly recall looking over the topics and choosing the one that I felt had the most information in which you could write about. The topic that I selected asked us to analyze the ways in which Henrietta and her family’s right of privacy was infringed upon, and to evaluate the impact her cells had. The research paper that I recently did on artificial intelligence had both similarities and differences to the paper on Henrietta.…

In Joseph M. Williams and Lawrence McEnerney’s Writing in College, Williams and McEnerney discuss the shift from high school writing to college writing where argument, interpretation of expectations, and learning how to make a “good” point in a paper are key to successfully satisfying the instructor’s assignment. Arguments should be convincing, with evidence to support their reasons, and to have counters answering objections and other questions that may go against its favor. Williams and McEnerney write, “-universities hold as their highest value not just the pursuit of new knowledge and better understanding, but the sharing of that knowledge…whatever it is we think, it is never the entire truth. Our conclusions are partial, incomplete, and…

At the beginning of the year it felt like I would have never been able to write any paper that was more than two pages long, it just seemed impossible, but for the research paper I actually had to stop myself from going off and writing a twelve page paper. I will admit and say that English is not my strong suit, in fact it is probably one of my more difficult classes. But just because it is difficult does not mean I don’t like it. I like looking for topics that interest me and still fit in with the guidelines, I like getting involved in the paper and researching the topic until it feels like my head is about to explode. I never saw any of that coming, I thought that I was going to have to go through English and just pray…

Looking at my most recent paper, the research paper, I think that I have grown at organization and careful flow of thoughts. I used to just begin writing my papers without any plan or organization, but throughout this course we learned that you should base your paper around your thesis statement. The research paper I wrote was on the “The Medias Impact on Your Body Image”. I could have chosen an easier topic to research, considering that the opposing view was pretty controversial, but I felt I had acquired the skills that I needed to really learn and understand this complicated issue. Enrolling in this English class, I feel that have…

    English 1101 Reflection

When it comes to writing papers, I usually have a difficult time getting started. I sometimes have trouble with certain topics, getting the general concept, and then turning it into a writing that will get my point across. I feel as if I’m not very creative with my words as I should be without sounding so scattered brained and lost. I was a little nervous when entering English 1102, after having such a difficult time in English 1101 online. At first I did feel at ease but once we got to doing research on a particular food and the articles, I did have some challenging moments. In in the end I did pull my works together and I plan on sharing some of my reflections while taking a look back on a couple of my papers.…

Since I am a sluggish writer who “has to” complete everything in the last minute before the deadline, writing a twenty-pages research paper is tons of work for me. It is also very challenging for me to organize various sentences and ideas together to demonstrate my arguments. I also have some frequent problems with word choice and prepositions. Other times my instructors would think the…

English was the subject that requires too much thinking. In my family I was always known as the over achiever. Other school subjects came easy, but not English. For some strange reason, whenever I tried to write, I had no idea where to begin or when I did write something it did not make any sense. It is like I was stuck with permanent “writers block”. If someone asked me about my topic, I could tell someone out loud about Shirley Temple. A few days before first drafts were due, my grandmother saw me at the kitchen table, clearly stressed out with hands on my head. I explained to her my situation, and told her “I hate writing!” My grandmother sat down next to me, and read the few sentences I had written. She asked if told I asked my teacher for help. I replied “No…” she then said “Well you need to ask her before it’s due, I would help you if I could. But we did not have to do research papers when I was in school.”, “But you need to take a deep breathe and calm down…it is impossible to do anything done right if your upset.” The next day, in class we went over MLA format, how to do a bibliography, and transitional words. After lecture, I went to my teacher and explained what was going on with my research paper. Basically,…

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I trudge up two flights of stairs with the wind whipping at my face as my fingers feverishly click out the final text message I need to send before class starts. I walk into the warm, musty computer lab and sit at my usual spot with the view of the library through the tree limbs. I am always sure to come to English class because I know of my terrible history in this subject area. I have always struggled with English and before this semester had assumed that the college level class would be the death of me. As I read over the syllabus for this class it states that we will learn to understand writing assignments as a series of tasks and develop flexible strategies for generating, revising, editing, and proof-reading the assigned papers. I shuddered at the sheer thought of having to write five papers. Narrative, Evaluation, Profile, Position. These words might as well have been written in another language because I had no idea how to differentiate between them. Despite my fears, I believe this semester’s English 101 course has truly helped me develop my writing skills and advance to a more capable writer.…

Mike Rose presents an issue about student`s block during writing. He starts expressing an example extracted from interviews of undergradutes from UCLA who five of them present this block problem and the other five do not. It is also explained that emotion brings this problem and these emotion are what divide the five students with this block problem and the other five who does not present it. Also, the students who were not in problem could have used some rules or strategies to avoid the problem. The first strategie is called rules. It is defined as ‘’an inferred capability that enables the individual…
