The first significant Canadian event that I picked was the Korean War. The Korean War was a conflict in Korea between North and South Korea spanning from June 25th 1950 to July 27th 1953, the south backed by the United Nations and the north backed by China with some material aid from the Soviets. The war was started due to a political division of Korea due to an agreement with the allied forces after WW II. After that the American administrators proceeded in dividing the Korean Peninsula along the 38th parallel leaving the U.S in control of the south while the Soviets controlled the north.
North Korea setup a communist government while the south set up a right-wing government. After numerous failed reunification attempts North Korea invaded the south. With the material aid from the Soviet Union, North Korea crossed the 38th parallel and soon after captured Seoul, the capital of South Korea. In 1950 the Soviets boycotted the United Nations Security Council unknowing that had they shown up they could of prevented Military aid from 28 countries including the U.S. and Canada.
With the help from the UN, South Korean forces repelled the invasion pushing the North Korean Army back past the 38th parallel. The UN forces then proceeded to push the North Korean Army close to the Chinese border. Soon after the North Korean’s got a lot of help from the Chinese helping them repel the attack and once again push past the 38th parallel. Throughout the war a handful of massacres took place including the Seoul National University Hospital Massacre where North Korean troops killed all the forces guarding the hospital. After that they entered the hospital and proceeded in killing all medical personal, wounded soldiers, and citizens. 1951 had a cruel winter for 50 to 90,000 SKNDC soldiers as they starved to death while marching south during the Chinese offensive. It is said that their commanding officers embezzled funds that were earmarked for food. Fighting during the
