In order for college students to understand the importance of writing, they must understand the impact it has on their lives. While writing may sometimes seem like an insignificant subject, writing serves as a silent voice. Writing has opened the door to communicating unlimited amounts of information. In addition, to writings endless uses it serves as a social networking tool in this digital revolution. When asked the question “why write?” you must ask the question “why communicate?” The purpose of this text is to identify the importance of writing in our everyday interactions with the world around us. Newspapers, magazines etc. have for generations been a vehicle for communicating information. It was best said by the late English author Edward Bulwer-Lytton “the pen is mightier than the sword.” While reflecting upon this quote it is important to ask where history would be without writing. We would have very little evidence about the past. Famous quotes such as Edward Bulwer-Lytton’s would be forgotten and unknown by future generations. Today writing is used for texting; social networking and that dreaded term paper to list a few. Writing has become a voice for many generations from the ancient Egyptians to the gossip blogs. Could you picture the grocery store without words? Could you imagine having to guess how to build that new desk you just bought from the store? This would be our world without writing. Some of the most vital information about our ancestor would no longer be common knowledge. While writing seems like such a minor element eliminating it would change our whole lives. The glam metal band Cinderella once wrote “ Don’t know what you got till its gone.” Those lyrics ring true when it comes to writing. Without writing we would lose the words that were unable to be spoken.
