La Figlia Che Pinange
“La Figlia Che Piange” is a poem by Thomas Stearns Eliot, which was printed in Prufock and Other Observations in 1917. In this poem, Eliot describes a very familiar incident to the readers: A breakup, which is not something mutual in the poem. It is unexpected for the female. However, Eliot does not focus on the female and her suffering. In contrast, he, I think, wants to display how the man, who wishes to break up, suffers and how he is paralyzed by the breakup. Of course, one may interpret the speaker as female, but in this paper, I will examine the poem by assuming the speaker as a male and I will also focus on how the structure and the use of some tropes enhance the theme of the poem. The poem consists of three big stanzas, which create a songlike poem although they do …show more content…

His coming is not a pleasant surprise because, from the next stanza, we understand that he comes to offer to end their relationship. The second stanza starts with anaphora “So I would have…” and the repetition of “would” modal creates a sense of obligation. Also in these lines, the perspective is always changing which leads to a confusion:
“So I would have had him leave
So I would have had her stand and grieve
So he would have left…” (Lines 8-10)
For lines 8 and 9, it can be said that it is written by the perspective of the female who considers herself as guilty because of his leaving. In other words, she thinks herself as the reason of this breakup. What an unpleasant thought that men lead us to think! On the other hand, our real speaker constantly seeks a way to console her because all he thinks is how he upsets the girl. Line 13 “I should find”, for example, is deliberately cut short in order to create a suspense. What is the thing you should find? The next lines give the answer:
“Some way incomparably light and deft
Some way we both should understand
Simple and faithless as a smile and shake of the hand.” (Lines

    2. A stanza is a group of lines in poetry. (Billy Collins’ poem “Snow Day” on page 41 is eight five-line stanzas, for example.) Write a poem of three-line stanzas that follows this pattern: The first line consists of an abstraction, plus a verb, plus a place; the second line describes attire; and the third line of each stanza summarizes an action. Let it flow. Each stanza should make sense by itself; all together the poem does not have to make absolute sense. See the examples on page 24 of Imaginative Writing. Your completed poem should be at least eight stanzas.…

The structure of the poem is another way the poet presents his feelings about marriage. The sentence length in the first stanza suggests that it is quite a long and methodical process leading up to finding a partner for marriage, “but then”, in the second stanza; once it occurs its a lot easier and is almost sets you free. The structure also shows the contrast between pre marital life with the difficulties of living alone and benefits and pleasure of sharing your life with someone, this is done by breaking up the stanzas, with short phrases such as…

In line 13, the word "Quick" is capitalized. When I first read this, I thought she was telling him to quickly get up. Then I realized it was capitalized and the word actual could be used to describe what she's saying or as his name. The title of the poem "I do, I will, I Have" I think it's significant as well. It's showing that most marriages end in divorce. It would either be his experience or the experience of many others. Another observation I made is from lines 11 through 14. He's not only showing they have two different views but the differences in being optimistic and pessimistic. The guy is seen as being optimistic. He's very laid back, hopeful and confident about things. Shes very pessimistic and things the worst and always seems to be worrying. I think with this statement he's showing the stereotype between a man and a women. Most men and women are seen in the same way that he portrayed them.…

In T. S Eliot’s literary work, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” is introduced with an epigraph from Dante’s Inferno to support the protagonist’s paralysis and the futility of life. The poem is considered a vital work in post modern art used to deconstruct and dehumanize the protagonist’s subjectivity. The epigraph from Dante’s Inferno is quoted by a man trapped in the eighth circle of Dante’s fictional construct of Hell and shares similar existential outlooks on the purpose of life. The epigraph has strongly influenced the poem and shares similar criticism regarding the protagonists of both literary work’s circumstances of living. In the literary work, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” the use of the epigraph from Dante’s Inferno is critical in setting the poem’s tone, theme, and addressing the protagonist’s perspective.…
