Title:
Compound Pendulum

Background:

Background 1 by Syahnaz Azlin Razlan

The experiment “Compound Pendulum” was conducted on 13th August 2008 in Machines Dynamics Laboratory. The experiment was conducted in groups of four, and was supervised by lecturer Mr. Mohd Azahari Johan. Conducting this experiment is for fulfilling the requirements of Applied Mechanics Lab (MEC 424).

A pendulum is defined as body so suspended from a fixed point as to swing freely to and from by the alternate action of gravity and momentum. It is used to regulate the movements of clockwork and other machinery. Therefore, a compound pendulum is a pendulum consisting of an actual object allowed to rotate freely around a horizontal axis

Consider an extended body of mass [pic]with a hole drilled though it. Suppose that the body is suspended from a fixed peg, which passes through the hole, such that it is free to swing from side to side, as shown in Figure 1. This setup is known as a compound pendulum.

The types of bodies that are being used in our experiment was Round conrod bar, Square conrod bar and trapezium plate. The main idea that been applied in this experiment was the theory of Moment of Inertia.

Background 2 by Muhamad Widad Al-Jefri Ibrahim

The experiment title is on compound pendulum. We call a rigid body suspended and free to swing about an axis is a compound pendulum. A compound pendulum behaves like a simple pendulum with effective length, L. The experiment is done to find centre of mass of experiment’s specimen. There are three type of specimens used in this experiment. They are Trapezium bar, Round conrod bar and Square conrod

Note: The pendulum bob is released at a height below the height of the peg. A pendulum made of a string of length 10.5 m and a spherical bob of mass 7.3 kg and negligible raius swings in a vertical plane. The pendulum is released from an angular position 39 ◦ from vertical as shown in the figure below. The string hits a peg located a distance 6 m below the point of suspension and swings about the peg up to an angle α on the other side of the peg. Then, the bob proceeds to oscillate back and forth between these two angular positions.…

    1. Since the mass of the plate is a uniform, the center of mass is in the center of the plate. The plate has diameter d = 28 cm, thus the center of mass is 14 cm from the edge of the plate. In the lab, two scenarios will be analyzed; 1) when the glass is standing up, and 2) when the glass is laying on its side. When the glass is standing up, its mass is uniform about the axis of symmetry. Therefore, the horizontal center of mass will be at the exact midpoint between the two sides of the glass. The radius of the glass is 4 cm, thus the horizontal center of mass, when the glass is standing up, is 4 cm from the edge of the glass. On the other hand, when on its side, because the mass of the glass is not uniform, that is two-thirds of the mass is in the base, the vertical center of mass has to be calculated using the equation xcm=miximi, where mi is the mass of the ith component and xi is the distance away from the origin the center of mass of the ith component is. For a glass 8 cm in diameter, 16 cm tall, of mass 300 grams (two-thirds of which is in the base), whose base is 3 cm tall and is at the origin, the vertical center of mass is xcm=miximi=200g1.5cm+100g(6.5cm)(300g)=4.17cm. The vertical center of mass is located 4.17 cm from the bottom of the glass.…

As stated earlier in the introduction, it was decided to measure the time for 10 complete swings, in order to reduce the random errors. These measurements would be repeated two more times, and in total five successive lengths were used. We start from one metre, and decreasing by 20 cm for each following measurement, and the mass of metal bob doesn’t change all the time. According to pendulum is periodic. We will push it and record the period time of swinging (T) when it comes back. Then we can draw a diagram with data by Excel.…
