Experiment 3C
Graphing as a Means of Seeking Relationships
Pre-Lab Questions
1. Data in Lab #4, Experiment 3C will be analyzed in two different graphs. One of the graphs containing your own data and the other containing the class data.
2. The liquid in this experiment that is flammable as well as poisonous is Methanol.
3. The two variables that will be being measured are mass and volume. To measure the volume, a buret and 250mL Erlenmeyer Flask. To measure the mass, a scale and an Erlenmeyer Flask will be used.
4. It is important to the class that accurate results are obtained because a class data graph will be made after all the data is recorded.
Objectives The first objective of this lab is to make measurements of mass and volume for 3 different liquids. The second objective is to analyze the data by means of graphing technique. The last objective for this lab is to determine a mathematical relationship between mass and volume for each liquid.
Materials & Methods See Heath Chemistry Laboratory Experiments Textbook for a full set of materials and methods used in this experiment.

Mass of Erlenmeyer Flask:
By Itself: 130.6 g
With Water: 155.0 g , 155.0 g - 130.6 g = 24.4g
With Salt Solution: 182.8 g , 182.8 g - 155.0 g
With Alcohol: 201.7 g , 201.7 g – 182.8 g
mf – mi = ∆m
201.7 g – 130.6 g = 71.1 g
