First, obtain a dry 10 mL volumetric flask that includes a stopper with it and weight on a digital scale. Be sure to get the mass at the closest milligram. Then, pour DI water to the calibration mark of the flask. Place the stopper back and weigh it again on the same digital scale. Once recorded, it is okay to pour this water down the drain.
Observations:
Mass of Empty Flask Mass of DI Water Filled Flask
15.114 g 25.048 g
Now, put 100 mL of ethanol in a beaker and utilize a disposable pipet to fill the volumetric flask again to the calibration mark. Use the digital scale to weigh the filled flask with the stopper included. However, this time afterwards, pour the contents of the flask into a new 1 L beaker. This …show more content…
Prepare a specific heptane and acetone solution assigned by the TA. Be sure to perform this task under a fume hood due to the nature of these chemicals. After recording the mass of the empty and filled volumetric flask, record it on the lab spread sheet that will be provided. Once completed, pour this solution into the designated waste bottle and return all equipment where you found it.
Observations:
Mass of Empty Flask Mass of Filled Flask
Heptane alone 15.006 g 21.722 g
Acetone alone 14.738 g 22.525 g
"15+5" solution 14.733 g 21.714 g
"10+5" solution 15.600 g 22.630 g
"10+10" solution 15.515 g 22.630 g
"5+10" solution 15.256 g 22.666 …show more content…
MANUAL Q3: The stopper on top of the separatory funnel creates a vacuum seal on the funnel, which is what allows the solution to drip out slowly when the stopcock is open. Therefore, to drain out an entire layer efficiently from the funnel, it is best to remove the stopper.
Finally, pour the remaining top layer into a new 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask. Discard both flasks of solutions after getting approval from the TA present in lab. It is okay to pour the water based layer down the sink drain but the other must go into the designated waste container.

20 mL of water and ethyl acetate with red dye separated by layer The red layer is clearly the bottom water layer since we know the dye was polar and supposed to mix / interact with the water layer. Therefore, the top layer must be the ethyl acetate
