What’s Lacking in the World Today?
The measurement of a person’s level of success mostly depends on the amount of personal responsibility that is applied. Personal responsibility determines most, if not all, of life’s outcomes. Lacking personal responsibility in finances, the work place, and the home life can result in bad consequences. As a matter of fact, personal responsibility is a major, contributing factor of college success. Unfortunately, over and over again, people tend to blame others for their own failures instead of accepting their own involvement. However, if more people would begin to take their responsibilities seriously and accept them, …show more content…
there would be more college graduates than there would be college drop outs. By setting reasonable goals, managing time wisely, and learning from mistakes, college success can be achieved.
Definition of Personal Responsibility
According to Zavod (2011), “In our professional and personal lives, most of us typically take responsibility for our actions, words, and attitudes” (para.1).
Personal responsibility is the capability to accept and live by a standard set forth by society. Personal responsibility includes the self discipline to accept one’s own actions and the consequences those actions may return. Personal responsibility also means that when a person fails to meet a goal, they first look at them self to determine what could have been done to better meet that goal. Taking this approach keeps an individual from looking around for any reason to blame someone other than them self. According to the Personal Responsibility and Career Success (2011) article, Chris Widener points out, “We must take responsibility for our life and understand that we can, and will, achieve whatever we ourselves choose to” …show more content…
(para.2).
Personal Responsibility and Education
Personal responsibility is essential for college success. While in college, one has to take on certain responsibilities in order to get assignments done on time, study for tests accordingly, and arrive to class on time. When one can take personal responsibility for one’s actions, it helps to overcome difficult decisions one might face while in college. A number of things can cause distractions while in college which takes away from the effort that is required to succeed. When an individual can take on personal responsibility, confidence levels will rise and the ability to make sound decisions will come easy which will result in reaching life goals.
Personal Responsibility Plan
According to Zavod (2011), “Being responsible takes planning and meaningful communication, which in some instances may require us to say “no” even when we might want to say “yes” (para.4).
In the process of earning a degree, practicing personal responsibility can be achieved by staying motivated to accomplish long term goals. A good plan would be to look at one’s self and determine all responsibilities, such as studying and maintaining good grades, which are needed in order to have college success. Realizing that failures and successes, while in college, depend on if one is able to accept fault instead of making excuses. Robinson and Smith (2012) state, “Responsibility can be developed through such practice, including critical dialogue, at the heart of the learning
experience”(para.45).
Conclusion
Although many factors contribute to success, it is ultimately up to each individual and their own personal responsibilities to reach achievement. A person’s successes, as well as failures are both results of their own actions and they must hold them self accountable, no one else. Robinson and Smith (2012) state, “The first mode of responsibility is focused in rational critical thinking, and in awareness of the wider environment” (para.44). In addition, personal responsibility depends a great deal upon personal importance. Nevertheless, in order to succeed in college and in every other aspect of life, one must stay motivated and keep goals in reach by understanding their own personal duties, or responsibilities.
