Personal Responsibility and How It Relates To College Success
I believe that personal responsibility is when an individual takes the time to ensure that all aspects of themselves is carried in a way that holds them to a different standard and separates them from others. College success is when an individual sets educational goals for themselves and makes the necessary adjustments in their lives in order to accomplish these goals. For example, being able to manage your time, being self disciplined and being prepared financially for any unexpected expenses are only a few of the characteristics that can define someone as being personally responsible. According to After Admission, it states that even though most students who enroll in community college do not graduate or leave any better off then when first enrolled, it has not deterred others from continuing to enroll. …show more content…
Time management is a vital aspect of both personal responsibility and college success, this is because being unaware of scheduled events or assignments will lead to not having any success in college, which displays poor personal responsibility. Procrastination is when one waits until the very last moment to complete a task. It is very easy to procrastinate, and I know that I have been guilty of this on more than one occasion. I have found that setting short term goals for myself helps with accomplishing the necessary things such as reading my chapters early in the week which will allow assignments with the best quality. I have often procrastinated just because I liked the thrill of seeing if it could be done and everything would be completed but because I was in such a rush, my work often suffered due to information being left out and it would ultimately affect my grade leading to my education to suffer and not assist with my college success.
Showing self discipline not only shows great personal responsibility, but also shows that you are ready for college success and all the challenges that attending school brings. It takes a strong person to realize that certain priorities need to be placed in front of others. Sometimes you will have to say no to going out with friends because you have to meet a deadline for an assignment to be turned in, or you might have to miss that annual family vacation because of a class that you cannot miss. However, there is a method that can help with such a problem, and that method is self discipline. If one can be self disciplined enough to manage their time correctly, there will be enough time to do other extracurricular activities. Going to school is like having another job, for the simple fact that missing work is like missing assignments. By this I mean that missing too much work may lead to rumination and missing assignments can lead to failed grades. Being disciplined and showing structure by setting a schedule that allows you to focus on only school work for a certain period of time will prove to be beneficial towards your college success.
Money makes the world go round.
It may not always lead to happiness, but everything has a cost. A person who is financially prepared for the unexpected displays personal responsibility. It also shows that you are ready for college success. A person who does not care about their finances and spends at will by living outside of their means shows that a person has little to no regard for responsibility or educational success. If a person does not care for their finances, they may not be in good standing with the university that they may be attending and if you are not in good standing then that could lead to being on academic probation or lead to unnecessary holds on your account that will not allow for college success. If you over stretch your means due to yourself not being self disciplined and spending on the unnecessary items, then that could lead to missed payments on bills or even lead to not having
money.
There are many different areas that can lead to someone being personally responsible which will lead to their college success. In my opinion, the three that I have talked about all play off of each other. By this I mean, being able to manage your time effectively will show great self discipline when it comes to college success, and if one can be self disciplined then they can manage their finances in a responsible manner so that a student will not fall into unnecessary debt and will only allow for college success. According to Education Matters, there are two types of people, the ones who work for what they have and the ones who will take whatever shortcut presents itself and will accept any if not all handouts that are extended. I know that I am the type of person who goes after what I want and I will prove so by continuing to do well in school.
