In the movie, She’s the Man, actress Amanda Bynes acts as her brother for two weeks at a new school. Bynes’s character, Viola was on a female soccer team for a neighboring school. Viola’s team was cut because not enough players signed up. Viola’s boyfriend Justin is the captain of the Cornwall men’s soccer team and he tells her that she is better than half the guys on his team. Viola uses this to try to convince the Cornwall men’s soccer coach to let her and the fellow girls try out for the men’s team. The Coach tells Viola that men are genetically superior to women. After returning home Viola talks to her brother Sebastian and finds out he’s going to London for two weeks to play in a band festival. She uses this opportunity to impersonate her brother in hopes to make the Illyria men’s soccer team to prove that girls can compete with boys. Once at Illyria, Viola must constantly hide her sex from everyone; Viola’s friends help her out by staging scenes so that her teammates will think Viola is just another one of the guys. The research conducted was pinpointed at young males age 12-17. Young males were thought to have cross gender identity or gender behavior disturbance (Reker, Bentler, Rosen, Lovaas, 1977). This lack of identity causes boys to take on feminine characteristics. Boys will want to have children, cook and clean, even be the mother figure, when unsure of their sex identity. This is commonly seen in males who have not yet hit puberty; once puberty sets in it is oftentimes difficult for the child, because the hormones in the body don’t always agree with how the child views himself. A cross gender identity or gender behavior disturbance is found in one out of one hundred thousand children (Reker, Bentler, Rosen, Lovaas, 1977). Children who face these challenges often have social developmentally problems because they don’t know what sex group they belong

The independent variable of this study would be the boys and the dependent variable would be have to be investigates; as this would make this study a fair experiment. The method does not say how long it took to do this study; however it does say how many participants there was. The aim supports the results as we have found out in the results boys who do not have a father figure present during childhood are more likely to develop a problem with their gender identity. Though this study does not explain why children brought up in one- parent families, without a strong same-sex role model, do not have any difficulty developing their gender. It also does not explain why two children of the same sex brought up in the same home with the same role models can behave differently. For example, two brothers could be brought up in the same house and have the same group of friends but one could be more masculine in his behaviour than the other.…

There are numerous influences that contribute to one’s gender identity. The way in which a person is raised, or nurture that one receives as a child can aid in the formation of gender identity. Parents typically vision their offspring as male or female, and as the boy or girl ages they tend to assume one or the other; masculine or feminine traits. Another possible important factor in the determination of gender identity is culture and the society in which one is a part of. Some may formulate their gender identity according to social norms and how they appear to…

Parents dress the girls in pink and the boys in blue. Once children are cognitively capable, they themselves begin to contribute to the conformities of gender identity. Every parent hopes and prays that they will have a “normal” child, one that fits into today’s societal standards. This is why there are so many issues and complications that arise when an adolescent begins to push the boundaries of gender identity. There are invisible borders of what is and isn’t accepted by the general public. Gender determines how you dress, how you look, and how you act. However the most disturbing of gender determination is the fact that it controls how you feel, whether you are sensitive and emotional like a girl or tough and aggressive like a boy, you’re feelings are constantly being judged on a scale of appropriateness. Gender conformity is everyday behavior that conforms to norms and expectations that are related to a gender. Gender nonconformity is behaviour that is considered unusual and abnormal for a gender.…

Without her presence, the story would fall apart. The fact that she plays a male role sets up the dramatic irony the comedy needs. This dramatic irony gives extra meaning to Viola’s hints to Orsino that she loves a person “of his complexion” and adds humor to ordinary dialog(II.iv.31). In the beginning of play, this same dramatic irony allows for the love triangle to develop and complicate the plot. Moreover, Viola faking the role of a twin causes great confusion among the other characters. Antonio’s conversation with Orsino exemplifies this. When Antonio tells Orsino about Viola, Orsino scoffs at his claims: “thy words are madness”(V.i.98). The confusion caused by Viola appearing to be her brother leads to humorous misunderstandings. These same misunderstandings help build to the climax in scene V. Needless to say, the tension, humor, and suspense needed to power the plot comes from Viola acting the part of a male.…
